OVERVIEW

Luigi Barzini, writing in The New York Times, described this place as "undoubtedly the most beautiful city built by man." Photographer Randy Jay Braun calls Venice a “city of layers and textures, and reflections”. On this fabulous 4-day/3-night extension, you’ll have the opportunity to “get lost” in the experience; in the beauty, and magic of this unique place, with guides knowing exactly where you are the entire time.

Venice is divided into six sestieri, or neighborhoods, each with its own personality and its own pleasures. Ranging from Cannaregio which plays host to the largest population living in the city today, to San Polo which is the oldest section of the city, to San Marco, the best known sestiere for St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace, and Santa Croce, Dorsoduro, and Castello. On this itinerary, we will be sure to explore the hidden gems within, and thoroughly photograph Venice, often far away from tourist masses revealing the true Venetian lifestyle.

Day by Day

Venice is a fabulous place to be lost – in fact, locals will often advise visitors to wander the city without using a map. This is a lovely idea! Yes, the city can be confusing, with its labyrinthine winding passages and canals, but these passages hold the key to much of its beauty!

Day 1 ~ Private Walking Tour of the Original Venice (Guided)
Morning arrival in Venice on your own and check in to your 4-star hotel.

In the afternoon, you’ll have a private walking tour of the original Venice. On this private tour, you’ll begin with a classic – St. Mark’s Square! You will learn the history that lies behind the walls of its most famous landmarks: the Basilica and its Byzantine heritage, the Doge's Palace and its adjoining prisons. It is here where the true secrets are found, to comprehend how a city built on swamps became one of the most enlightened cities in the western world.

From here you leave the square and crowds behind to discover the "real Venice," as you enter a labyrinth of narrow passageways and alleys where an enchanting city of meandering canals punctuated by delicate bridges awaits you. Explore the lively Campo Santa Maria Formosa with its outstanding Gothic palaces and at the Scuola di San Marco learn about the famous trade schools of Venice that provided the foundations of the great mercantile empire. Through the sights and historical narrations you’ll learn how illustrious Venetians, like Marco Polo, and more common citizens, made this city of stone a vibrant and magical place. You’ll even see Marco Polo's House and enjoy tales of this legendary globe-trotting Venetian. (2 hour private walking tour.)

Day 2 ~ Private Walking & Boat Tour of Hidden Venice (Guided)
Beginning early this morning, we have a rich and stimulating itinerary for you – a private 3-hour walking tour combined with a private boat tour – of Venice at its best!  This is a walk of wonder and discovery of the real Venice, through its past and its present. Leave the hordes of tourists behind and discover the Venice of your dreams as you navigate a fascinating labyrinth of narrow alleyways punctuated by delicate bridges and enchanting canals.

On this private tour you’ll explore the lively and colourful market area of the Rialto Bridge and learn about the legend of hunchback of San Giacomo. Pass-by the old locanda (inns), where the merchants would sojourn and encounter the famous Venetian courtesans in the old red light district of Casteletto, that is home to the notorious "Ponte delle Tette."

Enjoy a guided walk through a labyrinth of streets and narrow passageways in the old artisans quarters of Venice and listen to numerous stories of the illustrious merchants and their acts of cruelty. During this walk, you'll see some of the oldest houses in Venice, quaint picturesque bridges and palaces, an old prison for tax evaders, and learn about how life used to be in Venice and how life is today for the modern day Venetians.

Visit the important Frari Church, the most important church in Venice after the Basilica of San Marco. Hidden away in the San Polo district of the city, the Frari is home to masterpieces of Titian and Bellini as well as an imposing funeral monument by Canova. (2 hours walking and 1 hour boat tour.)

Free afternoon and evening to explore on your own.

Day 3 ~ Murano, Burano and Torcello Islands (Self Guided)
Enjoy a day visiting three of the charming islands of the Veniatian lagoon, Murano, Burano and Torcello. Take a public boat “vaporetto” to the island of Murano which is the most famous of the Venetian Islands, thanks to the world known "Murano Glass" produced here. The people of Venice have been making crystal and glass since the 10th Century, when the Venetian merchants brought back the secrets of production from the East.

During your time on Murano, you can visit the Murano Glass Museum plenty of beautiful glassware that exemplify the high quality of glass produced on the island. From Murano you can take the “vaporetto” to the Island of Burano, one of the most picturesque of the Venetian lagoon. Famous for its lace-making industry, this charming and colorful fishing village has its streets and canals lined by pastel colored houses.

From here, transfer to the island of Torcello by vaporetto. This island is famous for the spectacular Byzantine mosaics in the seventh century Cathedral of Santa Maria dell'Assunta. Much of the island is a natural reserve, accessible only on the walking paths.

Afternoon return to Venice by vaporetto.
