Stefano Borlandi was born and raised in Italy. Since 1986 he has been a professional photographer with TAU VISUAL – Visual Communication Professionals, and has developed his art and portrait photography working at the International Venice Film Festival for the GRAZIA NERI Photographic Agency. Between 1986 and 1990 he was a photo correspondent for Mondadori’s PANORAMA News Magazine following the concerts of the most famous musicians on the international music scene. Then in 1990, attracted by the world’s diversity of ethnic and cultural identities, and believing in the importance of valuing, respecting and safeguarding this diversity, he worked in Papua New Guinea where he lived in close contact with indigenous populations. Between 1990 and 1998, from the Gulf War’s "Desert Storm" onwards, he reported from Italy and from abroad in Iraq, Albania, Somalia, Russia and Ex-Yugoslavia, and his work was distributed through the GRAZIA NERI Photographic Agency. He witnessed extreme squalor and conflict, and chose to cover this and to try to understand and bear witness to the hard existential conditions in which most people in many parts of the world live. Apart from the environmental context, he tried to communicate through his photographs the essence of the human soul mired in daily suffering and poverty.

In 1994 he took part in the WORLD PRESS PHOTO contest, and then in 1996 his portfolio was chosen for consideration by the prestigious MAGNUM Photographic Agency which was looking to appoint a new photographer for its organization. Not realizing this latter objective, and after a period of work in Paris, from 1998 onwards he stopped taking photographs and took time out to reflect and look for reasons to go on with his work in the world of communication. Up until then he had done his highly intense job as a photo journalist with energy, sensitivity, heart and passion. But at 38 years of age he made a different, radical life choice. From citizen of the world, after living in many different places in Italy and abroad including Trieste, Rome, Milan and Paris, Stefano followed a greater instinct to return to his origins and to nature, and in 1999 went to live in an old farmhouse high up in the mountains in the heart of the Dolomites.
After ten years surrounded by enchanting, hard and wild nature, Stefano has once again found the urge and good reason to start taking photographs again.
Together with his partner Elena they run the beautiful  and cozy mountain inn, La Corte delgi Elfi  surrounded by nature and the marvellous snow-capped Dolomite mountains.
