Three Water-World Cities of the Veneto: Treviso, Venice & Padova

Visit three of the most important cities in Italy: Treviso, Venice, and Padova. Connected by ancient waterways and trade routes, their lasting influence on the world reaches back from the history of commerce into present day beauty.

Trip Overview

In Italy, water is an object of beauty. The shores of the Adriatic Sea. The Alto Adige River pouring down from the Dolomite Mountains. The Venetian canals. But reaching back into history, and into today, water has held a purpose to mankind: transportation. On this amazing itinerary, you’ll visit three water world cities, all based in the Veneto region of Italy, Treviso, Venice, and Padova. Each has played a role in the development and commerce of not only Italy, but of the world. Venice established trade with the Byzantine Empire, the Middle East and Asia Minor, with trade routes reaching all the way to China (do you remember your history lessons about Marco Polo?). Treviso and Padova facilitated trade from Venice into the European continent. And all the while, stunning cities grew up around these centers of economic power.
The Veneto region of northeastern Italy has always had plentiful, natural water courses, and over the course of history an extensive network of artificial waterways was created to form navigable water highways that connected rivers to one another, and therefore cities to cities, countries to countries.
As you explore these three great cities, Treviso, Venice, and Padova – you will discover not only their prosperity, but the charm it has enabled them to develop. An intricate pattern of rivers, and the man-made canals that divert them, defines  neighborhoods and travel routes. The mix of architecture, art, food, and wine varies by city, and by neighborhood, offering the opportunity for discovery across every bridge, around every corner. And yet they lie a mere 50 kilometers (31 miles) apart!
