OVERVIEW

One of the best ways to explore the Dolomites is hiking an Alta Via, the beautiful long-distance “high routes” of the Dolomites. The Alta Via 2 is the furthest west of the Alta Vie. Dubbed the “Alta Via delle Leggende,” or High Route of Legends, the AV2 is undeniably more strenuous than the AV1, remaining at higher elevations throughout (as high as 2,900m / 9,514'), and with great reward.

On this exceptional trip, you’ll hike from north to south, from Alta Badia to Val di Fassa. Hike in Puez-Odle Natural Park, across the Sella Massif, and around Marmolada, the highest mountain in the Dolomites, and home to its largest glacier. You’ll travel through several of the villages in Alta Badia, including La Villa, Corvara, and Colfosco, as well as Val Gardena and Val di Fassa. Plus experience a variety of different landscapes and geological features, as you cross over multiple regions and through several natural parks. You’ll hike on plenty of lunar landscapes, across numerous vast pastures, through wooded valleys, along high plains (altiplano), surrounded by tall beautiful peaks throughout. The scenery alternates between mountains made of Dolomite rock (Sella Massif), to limestone mountains (Marmolada), to regions (Puez) made of a completely different type of rock altogether, with a completely different appearance that offers a strong, picturesque contrast to the surrounding Dolomite Mountains.

You have options on how best to enjoy this trip as well. Choose from a guided departure, where you’ll be guided by one of our outstanding Dolomites guides, or select a private departure, where you’ll explore on your own (with detailed maps and guidance of course!). And, you can hike different lengths of trail, for 8 or 9 days, or even do a more challenging trail running itinerary. The choice is yours!

Day by Day

Experience the Alta Via N.2, one of the most beautiful, diverse, and challenging trails in the Dolomites. From the top of Piz Boé, across the Sella Massif, to the Valley of Shadows beneath the majestic Marmolada, you’ll hike north to south, from rifugio to rifugio, for a wonderful and varied perspective of the Dolomite Mountains.

Day 1 ~ Arrive in Corvara, Alta Badia
Arrive in Alta Badia and check into your hotel. Corvara is situated in a wide basin-shaped valley at the foot of the Sassongher Massif. It is one of several villages in Alta Badia, a sunny hollow on the south side of the Val Badia in the Alto Adige region, where incredible hiking, skiing, and vistas abound.
In the afternoon, meet with your a Dolomite Mountains representative, who will provide a trip briefing, maps, and orientation, and answer any questions you have. Depending on when you arrive, you may have time for a hike or to explore one of the six villages of Alta Badia.

Day 2 ~ La Villa – Gardenaccia – Rifugio Puez – Corvara
Today is a great warm-up day, to wake up your legs after traveling, and help you acclimatize to the altitude. And, you’ll get your first taste of walking on the Alta Via 2!
After breakfast, begin your hike with a steep ascent of Mount Gardenaccia, and continue through beautiful green pastures to Puez-Odle Natural Park, on to Rifugio Puez(2,475m / 8,120') where you can stop for lunch. Be sure to take in the geological richness of the area that surrounds you. A final three-hour hike downhill on the easy and panoramic trail returns you to Corvara. (~6-7 hours hiking 14km / 8.7 miles, 960m / 3,149' ascent, 1,020m / 3,346' descent.)

Day 3 ~ Corvara – Val di Mesdì – Val di Bosli
Today begins the first day of your hut-to-hut adventure on the Alta Via N.2, hiking on the enormous fortress-shaped Sella Massif. The natural beauty of the surrounding Sella walls makes the views from this hike some of the most impressive in the entire region.
In the morning, depart from Corvara hiking toward Cascate del Pisciadù (the Pisciadù Waterfalls). Ascend through the Val di Mesdì, and continue hiking under the Dent de Mezdì (2,881m / 9,452'), through the Val di Bosli to a rifugio located on the northern terraces of the Sella Group (2,585m / 8,481'), your home for tonight. The rifugio is situated in a wonderful position with fantastic panoramic views into the Pisciadù Valley that will literally take your breath away. There is also a small but fabulous turquoise alpine lake next to the rifugio – perfect for relaxing or exploring. (~4-5 hours hiking 7km / 4.3 miles, 1,155m / 3,789' ascent, 127m / 417' descent.)

Day 4 ~ Piz Boé
Start your day with a steep ascent through the Valun dl Pisciadú to the Plateau dles Mesules. After the initial ascent, you get your first dramatic glimpses plunging down the Val di Mesdì, which you climbed up yesterday. Climb up to the highly panoramic Antersass (2,900m / 9,514'). A gentle descent leads to another steep ascent across scree that brings you to the top of Piz Boé (3,152m / 10,341') – the highest peak of the Sella Massif. You will be amply rewarded for the long hike: enjoy lunch at Rifugio Capanna Fassa, a wooden hut, and admire an incredible 360-degree view of the mountains surrounding you.
When you’re full and rested, descend down the other side of the mountain to your rifugio for tonight (2,536m / 8,320'). Situated atop of a natural rock balcony, the views you can enjoy from here are incomparable! (6-7 hours hiking ~6,5 km / 4 miles, 810 m / 2,660' ascent, 860 m / 2,815' descent.)

Day 5 ~ Passo Pordoi – Marmolada – Lago Fedaia
After a hearty alpine breakfast, hike under the majestic Sella Massif, and down to Passo Pordoi (2,239m / 7,345'). From here you begin to hike on the “Viel del Pan” (“Way of the Bread”) to Passo Fedaia. This footpath stretches right across the mountain, and was once used by flour merchants who traded flower for handcrafted goods and other products. It is a wide path, easy to walk, and is one of the most spectacular footpaths in the Dolomites – offering an incomparable view of the majestic Marmolada (3,342m / 10,964'). Oft referred to as “Queen of the Dolomites,” Marmolada is the highest mountain in this range, and home to its largest glacier.
When you reach Fedaia Lake, continue hiking along the lake to Fedaia Pass (2,057m / 6,749'), where you will spend the night. (7-8 hours hiking 15 km / 9.3 miles, 900m / 2,953' ascent, 1,387m / 4,550' descent.)
B,D… Rifugio

Day 6 ~ Malga Ciapela – Rifugio Falier – Passo de Ombreta
In the morning hike to Malga Ciapela and hike west along the river Torrente Pettorina. The trail climbs steadily through thick forest to reach pasture clearings. After you pass the farm Malga Ciapela Agriturismo, the uphill section begins in earnest, and then becomes easier as you reach Malga Ombreta (1,904m / 6,246'). This farm marks the entrance to Valle Ombreta, the “Valley of Shade,” named for its position in the shadows of Marmolada to the north. At the end of the valley you will reach to Rifugio Onorio Falier (2,074m / 6,804'), right under the imposing south walls of the Marmolada, with fantastic views eastwards of the Civetta and Pelmo Groups. Hike up to Passo de Ombreta (2,702m / 8,864'), and then descend to your rifugio (2,016m / 6,614') for tonight.
(8 hours hiking ~10 km / 6.2 miles, 1,340 m / 4,400' ascent, 765 m / 2,510' descent.)
B,D… Rifugio

Day 7 ~ Val de le Cirele traverse to Passo San Pellegrino
From your rifugio, walk on green pastures and woods towards the east. The path soon leads over a steep rocky area and then reaches a large crater, the Val de le Cirele, continuing to the Pas de le Cirele (2,683m / 8,802'), between the Cima dell’Uomo group and Punta Zigole. From here, descend on numerous hairpin turns into the dramatic Valle di Tasca. This has to be the best scree slope in the Dolomites, with stones just the right size to make this a memorable, effortless, and extremely enjoyable descent! Reach the green oasis of Fuciade (1,982m / 6,502') and have a private transfer to the village of Falcade, where you will spend the night. (4 hours hiking 6,5 km / 4 miles, 750m / 2,460' ascent, 800m / 2,624' descent).

Want to learn more about our Mountain Inns & Rifugi?
Rifugi – or mountain huts in English – are the classic accommodation for hikers, climbers, mountaineers, and ski mountaineers in the Alps. Set in spectacular locations high in the Dolomites, rifugi are accessible only on foot (with a few exceptions that are reachable by car). These marvelous establishments are open primarily in the summer, with a select few in winter, and offer meals and sleeping facilities.

The Dolomite rifugi are considered the best in the Alps. While some are dormitory style with bunk beds, many meet the standard of a simple guest house with private rooms and en-suite bathrooms, and each has its own unique character and charm. Bedding and linens are provided, hot showers are available, and meals are served in common dining areas – like a small mountain inn set high in the mountains with the most incredible vistas in the Dolomites. Whether you’re hiking in summer or skiing in winter, an overnight rifugio stay is not to miss on a Dolomite holiday.
