OVERVIEW

Celebrating an anniversary? Second honeymoon? Or just looking for romance? Then we have just the trip for you!

Crowning Italy's northern border, the Dolomites are a pristine alpine playground, where vivid green meadows nestle against enormous limestone peaks. Hiking trails wind between massive peaks offering new vistas at every turn. Ascending a via ferrata provides a vertical adrenaline rush, combined with panoramas usually reserved for mountaineers. Charming rifugios (mountain huts) welcome hikers with satisfying strudel and local specialties. Evenings are filled with a delightful mixture of Italian, Austrian, and Ladin cultures, where you can dine on distinctive culinary specialties, and savor fine Italian wines.

On this incredible itinerary, you will see the best that the Dolomites has to offer, including the marvelous rock walls of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo – magnificent sheer faces that turn from pastel pinks and all but flame red towards sundown – and the majestic Sella Massif. You’ll experience trails that crisscross these mountains and valleys, offering endless paths for exploration. You’ll stay in mountain rifugios that not only afford noon-time meals, but provide opportunities for a comfortable hut-to-hut traverse of these majestic mountains. And you’ll learn to climb the world famous via ferratas (“iron paths”) of the Dolomites, which offer non-climbers an easier approach to the mountains on well protected itineraries with wire cables for safety, and iron rods and steps fixed to the rock for surefootedness. And in four- and five-star accommodations, why not treat yourself to a relaxing massage at the hotel at the end of the day or a tantalizing meal and bottle of wine in the evening?

Day by Day

Enjoy a week of romance as you hike, climb via ferrata, and enjoy rifugio stays in the Dolomites! Each day is an opportunity for active adventures with your partner.

Day 1 ~ Arrive in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Dolomites
Arrive in Cortina d’Ampezzo (1,224m / 4,016') on your own and check into your hotel (private transfer available on request). Host to the 1956 Winter Olympics, Cortina enjoys a reputation for great skiing in winter, and in the summer attracts hikers and mountain climbers who challenge the rocky faces of the nearby mountains. It is also a destination for the international society set, and offers many year-round social activities, shopping, and dining.

Day 2 ~ Hike Tre Cime di Lavaredo or Climb Via Ferrata Averau (Guided)
In the morning, meet your UIAGM/IFMGA Professional Mountain Guide or a Dolomite Mountains representative for a trip briefing and orientation. Today you have your choice of hiking or of climbing a via ferrata.

Option: Tre Cime di Lavaredo Hike
A superb hike to the soaring Tre Cime di Lavaredo – probably the most famous landmark in all the Dolomites, and known across the world. You can have lunch in one of the rifugios in the area, tasting local specialties such as canederli (a Tyrolean dumpling) and goulash (a beef soup or stew). (~4 hours hiking 8.6km / 5.4 miles, 568m / 1,863' ascent and descent.)

Option: Via Ferrata Averau
A good confidence builder for beginners, this via ferrata is the historic training ground of generations of rock climbers. Your guide will be with you all the way to teach you the basics of traveling over the near vertical walls. The magnificent views of Monte Pelmo, Civetta, Antelao, Sorapis, and of the Tofane group to the north are outstanding on this route, and the Cinque Torri (Five Towers) sits just below the imposing bulk of Averau. (1.5 hours ascending an easy 75m / 246' via ferrata. Total ascent: 500m / 1,640'.)

This hike to the Alpe di Sennes uplands entails a wonderful range of scenery and habitats, two natural parks—Dolomiti d’Ampezzo and Fanes-Sennes-Braies – and the spectacular Croda Rossa (Red Wall in English, Rote Wand in German) mountain group. You’re likely to see chamois – a native European goat-antelope species, roe deer, marmots, and their trustworthy companions – birds of prey.

Hike to a family run rifugio at 1,965 meters (6,447'), a beautiful place to spend the night with superb view east to the Croda Rossa Massif (2,818m / 9,245'). (~5 hours hiking, 12km / 7.4 miles, 920m / 3,018’ ascent, 630m /2,067’ descent. A shorter hiking option is available.)

Here in the heart of the Dolomites, you'll enjoy superb panoramas of the Western Dolomites and the Marmolada Massif, the "Queen of the Dolomites." Regardless of which option you choose, you'll delight in remarkable views of the Marmolada glacier, the Dolomites’ highest peak. Take a gondola and a chair lift to Rifugio Kostner, and from there start your via ferrata or hike.
(Ascend a moderate to difficult 200m / 656' via ferrata. Hike to the top of Piz Boè: ~5-6 hours hiking 7km / 4 miles, 652m / 2,139' ascent, 913m / 2,995' descent.)

Want to learn more about our Mountain Inns & Rifugi?
Rifugi – or mountain huts in English – are the classic accommodation for hikers, climbers, mountaineers, and ski mountaineers in the Alps. Set in spectacular locations high in the Dolomites, rifugi are accessible only on foot (with a few exceptions that are reachable by car). These marvelous establishments are open primarily in the summer, with a select few in winter, and offer meals and sleeping facilities.

The Dolomite rifugi are considered the best in the Alps. While some are dormitory style with bunk beds, many meet the standard of a simple guest house with private rooms and en-suite bathrooms, and each has its own unique character and charm. Bedding and linens are provided, hot showers are available, and meals are served in common dining areas – like a small mountain inn set high in the mountains with the most incredible vistas in the Dolomites. Whether you’re hiking in summer or skiing in winter, an overnight rifugio stay is not to miss on a Dolomite holiday.

To learn even more about rifugi in the Dolomites, check out our Rifugios in the Dolomites article, and learn about one of the best ways to experience these incredible mountains!
