OVERVIEW

Think of a vacation relaxing next to the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean. And a vacation hiking through beautiful mountains, discovering cultural artifacts that date back before the Romans. And experiencing a unique style of Italian cuisine, that feels both familiar, yet distinctly different. Sardinia offers all of this – and more! On our Hiking and Leisure in Sardinia itinerary, you’ll explore both the mountainous interior of the island, and the beautiful Costa Smerelda, or Emerald Coast, to its north. You’ll have opportunities to be active, yet have plenty of time for relaxation. And boy oh boy will you ever eat!

During the first part of your trip, explore the Supramonte Massif. The landscape here on the east side of the island is one of the last wilderness sanctuaries on the entire Mediterranean Sea. Home to one of the most dramatic coastlines of the Mediterranean, it is also the location of one of the deepest, most beautiful gorges in all of Europe – the Gola di Gorropu. This spectacular canyon ranges from just a few dozen meters deep, to over 500 meters (100 to more than 1,500'!) – all carved through time by the Rio Flumineddu. As you explore, you’ll notice traces of human settlements scattered across the entire island – Nuraghe, ancient tower-fortress edifices built with large stones, dating as far back as the Neolithic Age. Thousands of these mysterious structures remain, showing us remnants of ancient times and ancient cultures that once ruled Sardinia.

After you’ve had your fill of hiking and exploration, shift gears to the leisure part of your vacation! Relax on the beaches of Isola La Maddalena, the largest island in the Sardinian Maddalena archipelago. Thisgroup of 62 islands and islets make up an archipelago located to the northeast of Sardinia, and offers some of the most crystal clear waters in the entire Mediterranean. A road runs around the perimeter, offering 45 kilometers (27 miles) of breath-taking panoramas. Granite and porphyry mark out jagged areas, coves, inlets, and turquoise sandy beaches, while the inland areas are made of gentle hills. Not only will you get your requisite beach time in, you’ll spend a day exploring hidden coves and turquoise waters aboard a tall sailing ship!

Last but not least, did we mention the food!? While seafood figures prominently in Sardinian cuisine (think rock lobster, scampi, bottarga, squid, tuna, sardines, and more!), suckling pig and wild boar are culturally more dominant, roasted on the spit or boiled in stews of beans and vegetables. Unusual pastas from malloreddus to fregula to pillus are here, just waiting to be discovered. Spices, mushrooms, cheeses, olive oils, local wine… exploring the island’s traditional cuisine never ceases to be extraordinary. You are sure to enjoy the Sardinian food and wine and hospitality of the local people, as much as you enjoy the trails and beaches!

Day by Day

Day 1 ~ Arrive in Sardinia
Arrive in Olbia International Airport (OLB) and meet your driver. Private transfer to your hotel for the next three nights in Su Gologone (1.5 hour transfer, 130km / 78 miles).
Twenty-five kilometers (15 miles) from the nearest beach, Su Gologone lies in the heart of Barbagia – a part of the island that is rich in traditions and history. Ancient olive trees and vineyards cling to the slopes of the mountainous Supramonte area, where the air is fragrant with myrtle and rosemary.

Day 2 ~ Hike in the Lanaitho Valley & the Tiscali Nuraghic Site (Guided)
In the morning, meet your English Speaking Professional Environmental and Hiking Guide for a trip briefing and orientation. Next, enjoy a beautiful private transfer to the Lanaitho Valley in the Supramonte Mountains. This area is considered a paradise for all those who love trekking, wild flora, and fauna. Once inland, you will hike to the Tiscali Village. Nestled in a valley atop Mount Tiscali (518m / 1,699'), it is considered one of the wonders of Sardinian archaeology. Thought to have been built and inhabited between the 15th and 8th centuries BC, the village is set onthe top of Mount Tiscali, in a huge hollow that was created by the collapse of a cave. 40 Nuraghic huts lie within. The village was entirely built along the walls of the hollow, so that it's impossible to see it if you do not penetrate inside. Some archaeologists think Tiscali must have been an untraceable shelter during the period of Carthaginian invasions.
(3-4 hours hiking, 4km / 2.5 miles, 100m / 328'elevation change.)

Day 3 ~ Hike in the Supramonte Mountains & the Gorropu Gorge (Guided)
In the mountains of the Supramonte, surrounded by thick forests and wonderful oleander, lies not only Italy’s, but one of Europe’s most imposing natural abysses – the Gorropu Gorge. Gola di Gorropu is one of Europe's deepest gorges, with magnificent white and ochre walls over 350 meters (984') high.

Hike down to the gorge on the challenging Gorroppu Trail, and explore this magnificent landscape: The bottom of the gorge is filled with white rocks and boulders of all shapes and sizes, smoothed and rounded by the waters of the Flumineddu River. The interior of the gorge has the feeling of a giant cathedral, with walls arching up towards the sky, and sunlight light filtering between the clefts, continuously moving throughout the day. Water remains in idyll pools after the rains, hidden caves beckon you to explore, and fern grottos dripping with moss take you by surprise with water droplets that strike you from above.
(5 hours hiking – 1.5-2 hours downhill and 2.5-3 hours uphill, 8km / 4.5 miles, 650m / 2,133'elevation change. Easier hiking option available.)
