OVERVIEW

Sardinia’s east coast and interior are one of the last wilderness sanctuaries on the entire Mediterranean Sea. The landscape of the wonderful Supramonte Mountains on the east side of the island belongs to one of the most dramatic coastlines of the Mediterranean. White cliffs rise 800 meters (2,625') high out of the crystal clear blue waters of the Golfo di Orosei. Thousands of mysterious Nuraghe villages and towers, scattered over this island, tell us of ancient times and ancient cultures that once ruled Sardinia.

You will be based in the coastal Mediterranean village of Santa Maria Navarese.  Founded in the 1950s by Baunese settlers, this coastal hamlet has grown around a Medieval church dating back to around 1000 AD, consecrated to Santa Maria Assunta. This territory offers a wonderful harmony between mountain and sea – its coastline is 40 kilometers (25 miles) long, spreading north from Santa Maria Navarese to Cala Luna, with calcareous cliffs that drop sharply into the sea. The territory is constituted of karstic vales of the basaltic Golgo plateau with the "Su Sterru" pit (the deepest in Europe) and the karstic plateau Margine. There are a great number of very interesting caves and pits all along the coast, below and above sea level. And the Royal eagle, the Queen hawk, the Corsican sea-gull, and the Bonelli eagle all live here.

On this easy to moderate hiking itinerary, you’ll explore some of the most famous sights in the south, both along the coast, and high up in the mountains.  Hike to the Pedra Longa needle, which protrudes 120 meters (394') from the sea, and explore the white sand Ispuligidenie Beach (also know as Cala Mariolu), with it’s clear green waters, and discover Grotta del Fico, said to be one of the most beautiful caves on the island.  Hike into the heart of the Supramonte, a rugged and rough mountain area, where still many secrets are concealed. Narrow footpaths lead you to the Su Gologone, a well that constantly pours out great amounts of crystal clear water; walk through the narrow and spectacular gorge called Gola di Gorropu, high up to Monte Tiscali, where you will find the ancient hidden city of the Nuraghe people.  And the food! You are sure to enjoy the Sardinian food and wine and hospitality of the local people.  Each day a new experience waits to be discovered.

Day by Day

Day 1 ~ Arrive in Sardinia
Arrive in Cagliari Elmas International Airport (CAG) and meet your guide. Private transfer to your hotel in Santa Maria Navarrese (2.5 hour transfer, 150km / 93 miles).

The hamlet of Santa Maria Navarrese, within the municipality of Baunei, is at the foot of a hill covered with olive trees, fig trees, locust trees and lotus trees, and dense bushes. Baunei, set on the slopes of Mount Santo, includes 30 kilometers (18 miles) of unmatched coastal beauty. The economy, which is mainly based on farming and agriculture, today is directed towards tourism and related services. These have been developing on the Golgo tableland and in the Baunei Supramonte which you will visit, and in the hamlet of Santa Maria Navarrese in the southernmost corner of the territory, where you are staying. This coastal village has become a renowned seaside location.

Day 2 ~ Santa Maria – Pedra Longa – Forrola – Return
Begin your exploration of Sardinia today with an incredible hike along the islands coastline. Enjoy splendid views of the huge walls and peaks of Giradili, considered by many as one of Sardinia’s finest sea cliffs, Ar Gennas, and Pedra Longa, and walk along Forrola, a stony beach.

Pedra Longa is the most impressive spur on the isle, surrounded by an azure sea, which makes the cliff walls appear to fall more vertically into the water. The monolith appears in front of you as an imposing calcareous massif, measuring approximately 120 meters (394') in height, composed predominantly of karst.  It has come to be known as the symbol of Baunei and all of Sardinia. (5-6 hours hiking, 12km / 7.5 miles, no elevation change.)

Enjoy dinner tonight at a shepherds house with, local food and great Sardinian wines.

Day 3 ~ Cala Goloritzè & Supramonte
Explore the Golgo area of Baunei, including antique church of San Pietro and the Nuraghe di Golgo. This territory is very rich in prehistoric evidence, including the cave of Su Marinaiu where there is indication of the first human presence in Sardinia. Stone from the Neolithic age located at the bottom of the rock face overlooking the town is particularly important. And there is a high concentration of nuragic monuments (including nuraghes, nuragic villages, and sacred areas) in the Golgo Valley.  Nuraghe are ancient tower-fortress edifices built with large stones, beginning around 1800 BC. The nuragic civilization was a civilization of Sardinia, lasting from the Bronze Age to the 2nd century AD, whose name derives from the nuraghe, its most characteristic monuments.

After visiting Golgo, hike down to Cala Goloritzè, a small white sandy stretch of beach overlooked by the 128-meter (420') high Punta Caroddi, also known as Aguglia. Return to Santa Maria Navarrese by boat (approximate 50 minutes). (2 hours hiking ~4km / 2.5 miles, 400m / 1,312' descent.)

Day 4 ~ Tiscali (Nuragic Village)
Today you will visit Tiscali, a Nuragic village, and its surroundings. The Tiscali village is nestled in a valley atop Mount Tiscali (518m / 1,699'), and is considered one of the wonders of Sardinian archaeology. This village is unusual in both it’s location and it’s structure, set on the top of Mount Tiscali, in a huge hollow that was created by the collapse of a cave.  The village was entirely built along the walls of the hollow, so that it's impossible to see it if you do not penetrate inside, which you do through a wide fence in the rock. (3-4 hours hiking, 4km / 2.5 miles, 100m / 328' elevation change.)

Day 5 ~ Hike in the Supramonte Mountains & the Gorropu Gorge (Guided)
In the mountains of the Supramonte, surrounded by thick forests and wonderful oleander, lies not only Italy’s, but one of Europe’s most imposing natural abysses – the Gorropu Gorge. Gola di Gorropu is one of Europe's deepest gorges, with magnificent white and ochre walls over 350 meters (984') high.

Hike down to the gorge on the challenging Gorroppu Trail, and explore this magnificent landscape: The bottom of the gorge is filled with white rocks and boulders of all shapes and sizes, smoothed and rounded by the waters of the Flumineddu River. The interior of the gorge has the feeling of a giant cathedral, with walls arching up towards the sky, and sunlight light filtering between the clefts, continuously moving throughout the day. Water remains in idyll pools after the rains, hidden caves beckon you to explore, and fern grottos dripping with moss take you by surprise with water droplets that strike you from above.
(5 hours hiking – 1.5-2 hours downhill and 2.5-3 hours uphill, 8km / 4.5 miles, 650m / 2,133'elevation change. Easier hiking option available.)

Day 6 ~ Exploring the Grottas of Sardinia
Today’s hike is to the Grotta del Fico (Cave of the Fig), probably the most beautiful cave in Sardinia. We’The grotta is very remote, located at the foot of a steep cliff, along the stunning limestone wall of the Gulf of Orosei – the coast in this area is a series of up to 400-meter-high (1,312') limestone cliffs! The cave opening is 10 meters (33') above sea level; easy walkways will allow you, in absolute safety, to walk along the bed of a fossilized ancient river within the cave. Beneath its beauty, it is important in both the history of Sardinian speleology (the scientific study of caves and other karst features) and wildlife research.

You’ll transfer to and from the grotta by boat today, enjoying a traditional lunch on board. The afternoon is free to relax and swim at the Cala Biriola, a lovely little bay that has a famous small arch visible from the sea, and a dense wood of evergreen oaks – the Forest of Biriola – that extends all the way down to the beach.

Day 7  ~ Cala Sisine
Enjoy a wonderful hike to Codula di Sisine (Sisine Valley) and enjoy relaxing and swimming at Cala Sisine, a beautiful beach. This pearl in the Golfo di Orosei opens out from amidst the spectacular cliffs of the Serra Ovra, which plummet vertically into the sea from a height of over 500 meters (1,640'). Cala Sisine is flanked by two rocky ridges that give this place an unusual mountainous aspect, made all the more unusual by the forest that thrives on the walls of the gorge, with its centuries-old carob trees and holm oaks.

The seabed here is made up of coarse, calcareous, white sand pebbles rounded by the sea. Its waters are of a changing turquoise blue, altered by the light as it dances from the sun reflected on the seabed. This is the ideal spot to dive down, perhaps only with a mask and snorkel, into its waters teeming with fish! (3.5 hours hiking, 12km / 7.5 miles, 400m / 1,312' descent.)
