Location

The Pine Lodge is set in Selva di Val Gardena/Wolkenstein in Groden, among the mountains Sassolungo, Puez and the Sella Massif.  Part of the valley of Val Gardena, Selva is best known for skiing and rock climbing, and woodcarving which has flourished here since the 17th century. Home to three cultures – Italian, Austrian, and the native Ladin, most signage in Val Gardena is written in three languages – Italian, German, and Ladin!

Situated in a lovely spot on the sunny side of Selva di Val Gardena/Wolkenstein in Groden, the Pine Lodge is located in perhaps the most prestigious location on the world famous Sellaronda, in the heart of the Dolomites. A 2-5 minute walk takes you to the village center. Even more importantly for skiers, the closest ski lifts are just 300 meters (984') from the chalet, while on your return you can ski back to within 200 meters of the chalet. For summer walkers, it goes without saying that wonderful hikes start from right outside the door.

Day 2 ~ Explore Val Gardena/Alpe di Siusi ski area
In the morning meet your local English speaking UIAGM/IFMGA professional mountain guide for a trip briefing and enjoy your first ski day in the area.
The marvellous Val Gardena invites all winter sports enthusiasts to explore its innumerable pistes and descents. Efficient modern lift systems ensure a comfortable ski holiday in Val Gardena / Alpe di Siusi, world-renowned for its champions.
A total of 175km / 108,7 miles of dream slopes that run as far as the eye can see, served by 79 lifts! Winter sports in Val Gardena are not just a tradition, but in fact reveal their most attractive side. The slopes that depart from the suggestive villages of Ortisei, S. Cristina and Selva reach the imposing Dolomite peaks of Sassolungo, Sciliar, Odle, Cir and Sella, with access to the famous Sellaronda. The wide, generous and gentle slopes of the highest Alp in Europe, Alpe di Siusi, are a veritable paradise for beginners and families with children. A front row seat facing the Dolomites, and snowy paradise, but take care, it’s habit-forming!

Day 3 ~ Cortina D’Ampezzo, Cinque Torri & Lagazuoi

After breakfast, a short panoramic 15 min helicopter ride takes you to the stunning Averau mountain, in the Cortina D’Ampezzo valley. The 360 degrees view in front of your eyes is just breath-taking, with the Setsass, Lagazuoi, Tofane mountain massifs right in front of your eyes.

Ski in the area of Cinque Torri, Passo Falzarego and take the Lagazuoi cable car, which arrives at an altitude of 2,800 meters (9,186') in just three minutes! Once you reach the top, stop to enjoy the breathtaking panorama from the terrace of the Rifugio Lagazuoi, famous throughout the world for its spectacular views of the Dolomite peaks. When you’re ready to descend, you’re in for a treat! The Armentarola slope unfolds along the foot of the imposing Fanes mountain, in an enchanting fairy-tale valley surrounded by majestic castles of rock and frozen waterfalls, making this magical descent an endless flow of thrills and surprises. And just like in the fairy-tales, the run ends with a horse-drawn lift from where you can connect with the ski area of Alta Badia from where you can continue skiing towards Val Gardena.

Day 4 ~ Marmolada glacier
In the morning, take a short 10 minutes helicopter ride to Malga Ciapela, where you'll find the first of the three cable cars taking you up to the Marmolada Glacier. You will get our full share of stunning views all around you, including the Catinaccio, Sassolungo, Sella, and Gran Vernel.
The descent from the top of glacier is an adrenaline boost in itself so prepare yourself for it, for it is bound to become a highlight of your trip!

Day 5 ~ Kronplatz/Plan de Corones & Sexten/Sesto
After breakfast, a 15 min panoramic flight takes you over Alta Badia valley and onto Kronplatz/Plan de Corones, a popular destination for skiers with its majestic 2,275-meter (7,464') peak standing out from the surrounding mountains. On the top of a wooded area, along the south side of the Pusteria Valley, it offers a 360-degree panorama of the entire surroundings. Admire the Concordial Bell located on the panoramic relief at the top of Kronplatz. The bell was cast by the foundry Oberascher in Salzburg and installed in 2003. The inscription translates ‘God gives peace to the people’ and the bell can be heard every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 12 o’clock.
Also located at the top of Kronplatz is the new Reinhold Messner Mountain Museum "Corones", dedicated to the lives of mountaineers and climbers. The building, mostly underground, was designed by the world renowned architect Zaha Hadid. The museum opened in summer 2014.

From the top of Kronplatz, ski down to Perca and connect to Sexten/Sexto by a modern and efficient train service and dedicate the second part of your day to discover this wonderful ski resort. Located in the east of the Dolomiti Superski area, at the feet of five imposing Dolomite peaks: Cima Nove, Cima Dieci, Cima Undici, Cima Dodici and Cima Una. Sesto offers 82km / 50,9 miles of perfectly grromed slopes with 31 lift facilities.
Your return flight to Selva is one to remember, for the peaks of the "Tre Cime di Lavaredo" make up the stunning scenery found in Alta Val Pusteria. Tre Cime di Lavaredo literally means “the three peaks of Lavaredo” (also called the Drei Zinnen in German). These three distinctive battlement-like peaks from east to west are Cima Piccola/Kleine Zinne, Cima Grande/Große Zinne, and Cima Ovest/Westliche Zinne. The Tre Cime are perhaps the best most recognizable trio of peaks in the Dolomites, and certainly some of the most beautiful mountains!

More info

SUMMER
The Pine Lodge Chalet offers stupendous access to all things summer in the Dolomite Mountains! Hiking, cycling, mountain biking, climbing, shopping, and dining – it is all here for you at Pine Lodge! But don’t forget, you’re on vacation, and the chalet’s sun terraces and stunning views are also the ideal place to do nothing – just relax and luxuriate in your surroundings. However, for your more active pursuits, here are a few sample itineraries to get you thinking…

Explore the Villages of Val Gardena
Getting a taste of the local culture is a great way to experience the Dolomites. Val Gardena is home to three cultures – Italian, Austrian, and the native Ladin. You’re sure to notice that most signage here is written in all three languages! And with some 90% of the population fluent in Ladin, the ancient indigenous language, you can experience a piece of Dolomites culture just by listening. Each of villages here – Selva, just a five minute walk from your chalet, Ortisei, and Santa Cristina – has its own distinct personality and charm. Take some time to explore the museums, castles, restaurants, and shops. You’ll notice there is a wealth of woodcarving here, which has flourished in this valley since the 17th century. You’ll find beautiful masks, figures, and toys, and if you’re interested, we can arrange for a visit to an artisan wood carvers work shop!

Guided Excursions
Dolomite Mountains offers guided hiking, road biking, mountain biking, climbing, and via ferrata itineraries throughout Val Gardena and the surrounding Dolomite valleys. The hikes and biking itineraries below can be done with a guide or as a self guided excursion. And if you’re up for more of a vertical challenge, we’ll arrange one of our UIAGM/IFMGA Professional Mountain Guides to take you rock climbing or on a via ferrata! We can also arrange for tandem paragliding adventures and yoga classes.

Hike in Puez-Odle Natural Park
You’ll start from the town of Ortisei, just one town over from Selva, and dominated by Rasciesa Peak. Take the funicular to Rifugio Malga Saltner (2,111m / 6,926') from where you will start your hike. This is an easy hike, suitable for almost anyone, as the trail is predominantly flat with little or no elevation change. Stop for a drink at Rifugio Brogles (2,045m / 6,709') and admire the north faces of the dramatic Odle Group. From here, you have two options:

Option 1:
From Rifugio Brogles, hike through the steep and beautiful Forcella Pana, right through the dramatic Odle spires, to reach the Seceda Mesa. Walk for 10 minutes past the mesa to Baita Sofie (2,412m / 7,913') where you can enjoy a superb lunch. When you’re ready, descend to town via gondola. (5 hours hiking ~7 km / 4 miles, 367m / 1,204' ascent, 66m / 216 descent.)

Option 2 (easier option):
From Rifugio Brogles, hike downhill to the middle tram station of Mount Seceda (~1,690m / 5,545'), from where you’ll ride down to town on the gondola.

Hike Under Sasso Lungo and Sasso Piatto
Departing from the Sella Pass (2,180m / 7,152'), a short drive south of Selva, you’ll enjoy a beautiful hike under Sasso Lungo and Sasso Piatto on the famous Friedrich-August-Weg. Following ancient shepherd routes, spectacular views take you to Rifugio Sassopiatto (2,300 / 7,546'), Rifugio Vicenza (2,253m / 7,391'), and Rifugio Comici (2,153m / 7,063'). This loop hike continues through an unearthly landscape of tumbled boulders—Città dei Sassi (“city of stones”) — arriving back at Rifugio Passo Sella where you began.
(6-7 hours hiking 18 km / 11 miles, 850m / 2,788' ascent and descent.)

Sellaronda by Road Bike
The Sellaronda is considered a classic ride in alpine cycling. This famous tour circumnavigates the Sella Massif, summiting all of the Dolomites’ passes that surround the Sella Group Group (Passo Sella (2,240m / 7,349'), Passo Gardena (2,136m / 7,008’), Passo Pordoi (2,242m / 7,356'), and Passo Campolongo (1875m/6152’) – four mountain passes, three of which are higher than 2,000 meters (6,600')!  Each of these passes provide access to the different Ladin valleys (Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Val di Fassa, and Arabba), and views from each are truly remarkable.  (67km / 41 miles road biking, 1,849m / 6,066' ascent.)

Sellaronda by Mountain Bike
During winter, the Sellaronda is considered one of the most popular ski tours in the world. Why not take advantage of the lifts in summer and circumnavigate the Sellaronda by mountain bike? On this bike tour, you’ll have the opportunity to see more of the Dolomites in one day than many see on an entire trip! You’ll take lifts up four high altitude passes and descend to the valleys below, primarily on single-track trails.  Ascents and descents are full of breathtaking views of some of the most beautiful peaks of the Dolomites. (6 hours biking 58km / 36 miles, 3,400m
/ 11,154' ascent and descent via cycling and lifts.)

WINTER
The Pine Mountain Chalet is perfectly positioned to enjoy the Dolomiti Superski – 12 ski areas featuring 1,200 kilometers (746 miles) of prepared, lift-served pistes (all on one ski pass!) that will lead you to discover the breathtaking beauty of the Dolomites. The nearest ski lifts (the nursery slopes) are just 300 meters from the chalet, and will take you to the Dantercepies Gondola, set right on the world-famous skiing circuit that circumnavigates the Sella Massif – the Sellaronda. At the end of each day skiing, you can ski back to within 200 meters of the chalet! Off-piste and backcountry skiing are plentiful in this area, with ample lift-service side-country pistes as well as those that require a bit of hiking, but are well worth the effort with the reward of fresh powder!

Cross country skiing is not to be over looked, and the Val Lunga/Langental Cross-Country Ski Track in the Puez-Odle Natural Park is just a short walk or drive away, with its 12 kilometers (7 miles) of groomed tracks. Alpe De Siusi is just a few kilometers further, with an additional 50 kilometers (30 miles) of tracks. Snowshoes can also be rented for invigorating walks in otherwise unreachable places. And there are some great toboggan runs, providing fun for the entire family!

And winter activities aren’t relegated to daylight hours any more! Try night skiing, with a stop for pizza on-piste. Check out quad biking through the snow, where you can “cycle” up to one of the various rifugi or mountain huts, and tuck in to a hearty dinner of a good pasta dish followed by game meat, or if you prefer a gourmet dinner.  The routes available vary in distance and you can ride your own quad or be a passenger if you prefer! Another option is riding up to one of the most prestigious mountain huts in a giant snow cat, and tobogganing down in the moonlight!
