About Alta Badia
Located in a large valley surrounded all around by the gorgeous peaks of the Dolomites, Alta Badia is truly the “heart of the Dolomites.” Geographically in the South Tyrol (Südtirol), this area was part of Austria prior to the First World War. Here you’ll find unique mountain scenery with villages rich in natural beauties and ancient traditions, witness the simple everyday life of the local people (the “Ladini”), as well as the customs and traditions of the ancient Ladin culture.

You’ll notice the street signs are written in three languages – first in Ladino (a neo- Latin language), then in German, and lastly in Italian. The mixed culture is very well marked not only in the language, but also in the architecture and cuisine. You will surely enjoy hearty meals that are representative of the incredible diversity of this region!

Alta Badia is located between 1,400 and 2,700 meters (4,593-8,858') above sea level and this altitude ensures optimal ski conditions throughout the winter, and offers breath-taking views of the most beautiful peaks of the Dolomites. Fast and comfortable ski lift connections, miles of wide, well-groomed slopes (130 km / 81 miles), and the spaciousness of the ski area allow you to enjoy pleasant and safe skiing days. Charming mountain huts and first class mountain restaurants round out the appeal, making Alta Badia a ski area for connoisseurs.

Day 3 ~ Sellaronda circuit
The Sellaronda Ski Tour is one of the most fantastic spectacular ski tours in the world, circumnavigating the Sella Massif. Considered somewhat of a “merry-go-round” for intermediate level skiers, this unique circular connection of lifts and runs was once the only way the ancient inhabitants of the Ladin villages could maintain a connection with each other. Nowadays it’s a modern day carousel that connects four Dolomite passes and four Ladin valleys (Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Val di Fassa, and Arabba). Dinner included at the chalet, prepared for you by the in-house chef.

Day 4 ~ Marmolada glacier
In the morning ski to the town of Arabba, take the Porta Vescovo cable car and continue through slopes and lifts to Malga Ciapela, where you'll find the first of the three cable cars taking you up to the Marmolada Glacier. Known as the “Queen of the Dolomites,” Marmolada (3,350m / 10,990') is the highest peak and the only glacier in these mountains. You will get our full share of stunning views all around you, including the Catinaccio, Sassolungo, Sella, and Gran Vernel. Dinner included in a typical restaurant of the area.

Ski in the area of Faloria & Cristallo and taste the excitement of being completely surrounded in a Natural World Heritage location, on these fabulous mountains. Ski in the area of Cinque Torri, Passo Falzarego and take the Lagazuoi cable car, which arrives at an altitude of 2,800 meters (9,186') in just three minutes! Once you reach the top, stop to enjoy the breathtaking panorama from the terrace of the Rifugio Lagazuoi, famous throughout the world for its spectacular views of the Dolomite peaks. When you’re ready to descend, you’re in for a treat! The Armentarola slope unfolds along the foot of the imposing Fanes mountain, in an enchanting fairy-tale valley surrounded by majestic castles of rock and frozen waterfalls, making this magical descent an endless flow of thrills and surprises. And just like in the fairy-tales, the run ends with a horse-drawn lift from where you can do it all again, or move on to another fabulous adventure.

More info

Examples of hiking possibilities:

Santa Croce Sanctuary: Hike to the Santa Croce Sanctuary at the base of the Sasso della Croce (Sass dla Crusc for the Ladin-speaking population). Walk uphill passing through a number of closely knit hamlets formed of clusters of ancient shingle-roofed timber farmhouses and barns known as viles. Continue walking through the pine forest with great views of the Santa Croce, Conturines, and Sella mountain groups as well as the towns of La Villa, San Cassiano, Corvara, Pedraces, and San Leonardo—all part of the Val Badia. Along the way there are a couple of steep ascents. It takes about two hours to get to the church and sanctuary of Ospizio S. Croce (2,045 m / 6,709’). Have lunch here and then descend to San Cassiano, on the same path.
(~ 5-6 hours hiking 11km / 7 miles, 590m / 1,935' ascent and descent.)

Rifugio Gardenaccia: Take the Gardenaccia chair lift, and from the chairlift station above Rifugio Sponata head north, following a path uphill on the left. The path is short but quite steep, as it winds its way through mugo pines. You will arrive in less than 1 hour at the plateau and Rifugio Gardenaccia (2,051m / 6,729’).
This rifugio is also an excellent starting point for a number of different walks towards Puez, or Prè Janin and Somamunt, to admire the peace and quiet that still reigns in this area.
(~2-3  hours hiking 4km / 2,4 miles, 270m / 886’ ascent, 620m / 2,034’ descent.)

Pralongia High Plateau: It is possible to ascend/descend the Pralongia Plateau on foot, or with the help of a cable car, depending on your energy level. This area is surrounded by mountains including the Marmolada (3,343m / 10,964'), the Queen of the Dolomites, the highest peak in the Dolomites and home to its largest remaining glacier. Once on the Plateau, there are plenty of rifugios (mountain inns) where you can enjoy the panorama and have lunch and a good glass of wine.
(1-6 hours hiking, depending on how long you wish to hike.)
There are a number of different chair lifts and gondola options for your hiking today, depending on where you decide to walk. Chair lift and gondola prices range from euro 4,20-13,00 one way, to 6,40- 19,70 roundtrip, depending on which lift you ride, and whether you take a single lift or a combination of two lifts to reach your destination.

Guided Excursions

Dolomite Mountains offers guided hiking, road biking, mountain biking, climbing, and via ferrata itineraries throughout Val Gardena and the surrounding Dolomite valleys. The hikes and biking itineraries below can be done with a guide or as a self guided excursion. And if you’re up for more of a vertical challenge, we’ll arrange one of our UIAGM/IFMGA Professional Mountain Guides to take you rock climbing or on a via ferrata! We can also arrange for tandem paragliding adventures and yoga classes.

Rock climbing with a guide:

The Dolomites are a rock climber’s paradise. Sought after by climbers from around the world, there is terrain for every experience level here. Protected top roped climbs are perfect for novices wanting to learn, while more challenging multi-pitch climbs are a great way to stretch your skills. What’s more? Unlike many other regions in the Alps, short “approaches” (the path to the base of a climb) let you spend your time climbing, rather than getting to the climb. And an added bonus is being surrounded by the incredible Dolomitic landscape, with unparalleled vistas from the top of each climb!

Via Ferrata with a guide:
Climbing a via ferrata is an exhilarating way to enjoy the magnificence and sheer magnitude of the Dolomites. In this awesome mountain environment, protected on a rock wall high above the valley floor, you will be stopped in your tracks by amazing views while you learn valuable mountain safety skills.
Via ferrata literally means “iron path,” originating from the metal ladders used by the military in WWI to navigate these mountains. While most of the ferrata have been replaced with newer hardware, they follow the same routes the military used, high into the mountains. Completely protected, attached to a system of anchored cables while you climb, you’ll enjoy vistas typically reserved only for mountaineers!

Sellaronda by Road Bike
The Sellaronda is considered a classic ride in alpine cycling. This famous tour circumnavigates the Sella Massif, summiting all of the Dolomites’ passes that surround the Sella Group Group (Passo Sella (2,240m / 7,349'), Passo Gardena (2,136m / 7,008’), Passo Pordoi (2,242m / 7,356'), and Passo Campolongo (1875m/6152’) – four mountain passes, three of which are higher than 2,000 meters (6,600')!  Each of these passes provide access to the different Ladin valleys (Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Val di Fassa, and Arabba), and views from each are truly remarkable.  (67km / 41 miles road biking, 1,849m / 6,066' ascent.)

Sellaronda by Mountain Bike
During winter, the Sellaronda is considered one of the most popular ski tours in the world. Why not take advantage of the lifts in summer and circumnavigate the Sellaronda by mountain bike? On this bike tour, you’ll have the opportunity to see more of the Dolomites in one day than many see on an entire trip! You’ll take lifts up four high altitude passes and descend to the valleys below, primarily on single-track trails.  Ascents and descents are full of breathtaking views of some of the most beautiful peaks of the Dolomites. (6 hours biking 58km / 36 miles, 3,400m
/ 11,154' ascent and descent via cycling and lifts.)

Cultural attractions in the area:
Museum Ladin Ursus Ladinicus: Since 1990 the Museum Ladin Ursus ladinicus can be found in one of the oldest buildings of San Cassiano. It is located on the market square. In this museum you can see a unique fossil collection consisting of the remainings of the “Ursus spelaeus”, a species of bear that lived in the Conturines mountain range. In summer 2011 the new Museum Ladin Ursus ladinicus was opened. On three floors now you can find very interesting details of the prehistoric bear of the dolomites and also about his life 40,000 years ago.

Ladin Museum: The Ladin museum can be found in the castle of San Martino in Badia. A visit to this museum does not only give you an insight into the history of Ladin valleys, but also into the Ladin language, which stood the test of time and is still spoken today. However, this museum does not only reveal information about Val Badia, but also about Val Gardena and Val di Fassa (Trentino).

Opportunities for kids:
Adventure Park: Kids can enjoy an adventure park and take an exhilarating zip-line ride where they’ll whip past the canopy of trees from platform to platform (ages 7-14) or try their hand at a ropes course.

Biotope Lake: The facility at the biotope lake in Corvara comprises three natural ponds—a swimming pond, a regeneration pond and a children's pool—and a sunbathing lawn encircled by alpine flowers and plants. A snack bar on the lake serves drinks and light meals on its sun terrace. The little ones will have fun in the play area, complete with slides and swings.

Bear Hole Park at Piz Sorega: A family fun experience. Tread carefully in the bear’s cave...don’t wake him from his slumber! And there’s more: fun water activities, zip lines and archaeological digs -learning has never been so much fun! Try the new mini golf course with our guest star... the bear!
