OVERVIEW

Have you ever noticed, in movies depicting Italy, there always seems to be a handsome man riding a Vespa motor scooter, with a gorgeous woman on the back, arms wrapped tightly around him. They cruise through the winding, narrow cobblestone streets, taking in the history of Italy. Always wished you could live that fantasy? Well now you can!

Dolomite Mountains is pleased to offer a leisure tour in the foothills surrounding Northern Italy’s Dolomites. For two days, you’ll explore the region by Vespa motor scooter, touring at leisure, taking in the sights, sounds, scents, and tastes of this remarkable region. Discover Prosecco – both the wine and the region – and let the bubbles tickle your nose and palate, as you sip and stroll through the hillside vineyards. And explore futher into the Dolomites foothills, riding up the thrilling “road of one hundred days,” with its tunnels and hairpin turns! You’ll also enjoy the luxury of a cultural tour through three of Italy’s most beautiful preserved villages – Asolo, Marostica, and Bassano del Grappa. While all of the Veneto was once under the reign of the Republic of Venice, it is particularly apparent in these towns. Set in or against the hillsides, where the Veneto plain meets the foothills of the Dolomites, both the architecture and the symbols pay homage to their history under Venetian rule.

Whatever routes you choose, you’ll have ample time to explore and experience. Hikes and walks throughout the estates and towns are ample. Wine tastings, gourmet meals, and food and wine pairing experiences are abundant. And the accommodations will delight you – almost as much as living the vision of riding that scooter through the movies!

Day by Day

Day 1 ~ Arrive in Follina
Arrive in Follina on your own (private transfer available on request). The Prosecco region is located 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of Venice, halfway between the Dolomites and the Adriatic Sea, in the foothills of the Veneto region. The location and low altitudes create an ideal climate for growing the grapes used to make Prosecco, as well as incredibly beautiful terrain.

Follina, your home for the first part of your trip, is a picturesque village with ancient origins, situated on the “Strada del Prosecco” (the Prosecco wine route). Immersed in the lush green landscape of vineyards, this small community is situated in the foothills of the Treviagian Alps, halfway between Valdobbiadene and Vittorio Veneto. The town was developed in the 12th century by a group of Cistercian monks, who used the abundant water supply of the area to establish a flourishing industry of woolen goods. Today, the town is an important cultural center, composed of seventeenth century palazzi (palaces), as well as being a hub of industry and craftsmanship, resulting from the buoyant hotel trade.

Day 2 ~ Prosecco Hills Vespa Tour: A Unique UNESCO Experience!
In the morning, take a short transfer to Vittorio Veneto (~30 minutes), where you will pick up your Vespa. Explore the Prosecco area, with it’s more than 100 "Prosecco Hills," as you leisurely wind your way between wine cellars, farm houses, and ancient villages. This area, between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, Is a unique UNESCO heritage site: The Prosecco Hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. There are more than 120 kilometers (74 miles) of narrow winding roads for you to ride your Vespa here, passing through villages and towns where you can smell the taste of the centuries-old art of wine making.  There are tremendous views and fascinating landscapes across the vineyard-laden hills for you to enjoy, along with medieval ruins, monasteries, centuries-old churches, and traces of the civil and religious history of the local people. And don’t forget to sample the local food and traditional products you can find in the many local shops and restaurants. Why not roll into a medieval village, catch the magnificent aroma of a local restaurant, and settle in for lunch – accompanied by a glass of Prosecco, of course! (4-6 hours riding a Vespa ~80km / 50 miles. Duration depends on the number of stops you make along the way!)

In the evening enjoy a Prosecco tasting at the courtyard of your hotel, followed by a delicious gourmet dinner at the 1-star Michelin restaurant “La Corte."

Day 3 ~ Ride Historic WWI Roads and Hike the Brent de l’Art Canyon
After breakfast this morning, leave your luggage at the reception desk and begin your second day of Vespa touring. Ride to the top of Passo San Boldo (706m / 2,316'). This stunningly beautiful road includes 18 numbered hairpin turns, six bridges, and five tunnels, with some of the hairpin turns actually inside the tunnels! The road is not just unique for it’s twists and turns, but also for it’s construction: during WWI the Austro-Hungarian army built the road just 100 days for refueling during the Battle of Piave, and was thus nicknamed the “Road of 100 Days."  Continue to the canyon of Brent de l’Art, a geological gem with magical red canyons carved by the Ardo River. From here, you have the option to hike up to Mount Visentin (a one hour ridge hike with fantastic views) and descend to Santa Croce Lake. In the afternoon, ride to Vittorio Veneto to drop off your Vespa. (4-6 hours riding a Vespa ~75 km / 46 mile. Duration depends on the number of stops you make along the route.)

Take a private transfer to the charming town of Asolo (~1 hour driving) and check in to your hotel. Asolo is a charming medieval hill town, with steep winding streets that weave between buildings that seem to cling to the hillside. From the Piazza Garibaldi in the heart of the town, it is a 5-minute walk up to the castle, from where you can enjoy a magnificent 360° view of the surrounding hills and Monte Grappa. Your luggage will await you at your hotel in Asolo. Enjoy dinner at the restaurant of your hotel.

Day 4 ~ Charming Villages of the Veneto – Asolo, Marostica, and Bassano del Grappa
After breakfast, meet your local English speaking guide for a private tour of some of the most beautifully preserved villages in all of Italy. Tucked into the plains and hillsides of the Veneto region, each of these villages was once governed by the Republic of Venice. You’ll note  the symbol of Venice in each village…  Saint Mark’s Winged Lion.  While the towns of Asolo, Marostica, and Bassano del Grappa share this common history and each have a castle protecting them from invasion, each have their own unique personalities that will surely captivate you.

Return to your hotel for your final night in this wonderful region of Italy.  Dinner on your own.
