Day by Day

Day 1 ~ Arrive in Merano
Arrive in Merano on your own (private transfer available on request) and check into your hotel. Located between the Ötztal Mountains in the Gruppo di Tessa and the vineyards of Val d'Adige, the city of Merano (324m / 1,063') guarantees mild Mediterranean climate and some of the most beautiful flower gardens in Europe. Each April, the town opens its doors to the internationally recognized ‘Merano Flower Festival’, attracting thousand of flower lovers and toursits from all over Europe.

A long tradition as a spa town has left its mark on Merano. Historical and contemporary architecture are in perfect harmony along the Passer River: modern design hotels stand right next to traditional buildings from the Belle Epoque. Highlights of a feel-good holiday include the new Merano Thermal Baths spa complex and the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle botanical gardens. Dinner included in your hotel's restaurant.

Day 2 ~ Bike in Val Venosta, from Lake Resia to Merano

In the morning meet your local English speaking hiking guide for a trip briefing and orientation, and to start your exciting adventure in Val Venosta.

Popular among leisure cyclists, the 80Km / 48 miles designated cycling route unfolds from Lake Resia 1,498m /4,913’ to Merano along the ancient Roman road ‘Via Claudia Augusta’. For the most part the route runs on flat terrain with gentle downhills, along the shore of San Valentino Lake and passing through several traditional small villages of South Tyrol: Burgusio/Burgeis, Malles/Mals with its seven Romanesque churches, and through the medieval town of Glorenza/Glurns. The route continues to Prad, the gateway to Stelvio National Park, the village of Lasa/Laas, then downhill to Covelano/Göflan and its apple orchards, to Laces/Latsch, with a final downhill to Merano/Meran. This cycling adventure can be shortened by using the efficient Venosta Valley railway system that operates regular services to Merano. Return to Merano and enjoy a relaxing evening at the Wellness centre of your hotel, or take a stroll along the charming town centre. (82km / 49,2 miles biking, 1,217m / 3,991’ descent. Option to shorten the ride by taking the train.)

Day 3 ~ Hike a portion of the Meraner Alta Via (High Route)
Alta Via di Merano is one of the most enchanting circular hiking trails in the Alps, covering a distance of 100KM within the Tessa/Texel Nature Park. Along this fabulous path you can admire the valley of Merano, Val Venosta/ Vinschgau , Val Passiria/ Passeiertal, Val Sarentino/Sarntal and the highest peaks of the Stubai and Oetztal Alps (western Breonias).
Along the way, you will admire the view of Castel Juval, one of four Reinhold Messner’s mountain museums. The casle dates back to the year 1278 and since 1983 it has become the main MMM Messner Mountain Museum, and Reinhold Messner’s private residence. The castle contains an extensive Tibetan collection as well as exhibits presenting a selection of ethnic masks from five continents.
Continue your hike until you reach the village of Monte Santa Caterina-Katharinaberg and take a private transfer to your hotel in Avalengo/Hafling. (~5-6 hours hiking 14km / 8,4 miles, 582m / 1,908 ascent, 870m/2,853’ descent.)

Day 4 ~ Hike on the long distance European Path
Today you will hike a portion of the long distance path ‘E5’ that originates in Britanny, on the French Atlantic coast, and unfolds through Switzerland, Austria, Germany, over the Alps to end in Venice. Five countries, countless valleys and summits. The alpine section is to be considered the highlight of the trail: rightly named ‘The King’s Segment’, the alpine portion begins at the Mittelbergferner Glacier (3,570m / 1,170’) in the Ötztal alps, across to Passo del Rombo/Timmelsjoch Pass (2,474m / 8,115’) to Moos in Passiria/Passeier, in the Italian side of the alps.

With your guide, take a short private transfer to Saltusio and ride the cable-car to the top. The first part of your hike will lead to the Tallner Alm, a grassy pasture at the foot of dramatic peaks. As you continue your climb, the trail becomes rockier leading toward Forcella Hirzer/Hirzerscharte (2,600m / 8,530’) and its towering peak Punta Cervina/Hirzer (2,781m / 9,121’). Begin descending to Lago di San Pancrazio/KratzbergerLake (2,119m/6,950’) and then along a grassy slope to Giogo di Pietramala/Missensteiner Joch (2,128m / 6,980’). Continue your descent onto Rifugio Merano/Meraner Hütte (1,960m / 6,430’), take the cable-car down to Avalengo/Hafling and reach your home for the night.
