OVERVIEW

When visiting Northern Italy you should not miss spending time in two of its most beautiful areas, offering unexpected treasures sheltered by high mountains encircled by lush nature.

On this itinerary, you’ll discover the city of Merano boasting a fascinating blend of Italian and Tyrolean Austrian cultures. Admire its churches and castles, walk past elegant buildings and soak in the thermal baths that make Merano a popular destination, immersed by Alpine landscape yet enjoying a mild Mediterranean climate. You will bike through Val Venosta following the Adige River from Malles to Merano, surrounded by towering peaks and glaciers on one side of the valley, to be paired with Apple orchards and apricot trees on other!

Travel to the shores of Italy’s most beautiful and largest lake, Lake Garda, where the mountains of the Northern Alps tumble to the water’s edge presenting a magnificent scenery, olive and lemon trees weave across the hillsides whilst vineyards dot the landscape. Lake Garda boasts rich history and medieval villages with their castles and forts, picturesque lake side resorts with the vibrant atmosphere of Italian’s finest Dolce Vita lifestyle and perfect Mediterranean climate to top it all up.

Day by Day

Day 1 ~ Arrive in Merano
Arrive in Merano / Meran on your own. Merano (324m / 1,063') is an Alpine town in the South Tyrol / Alto Adige. It is located just south of the Austrian border, at a crossroads between the majesty of the Alps and the allure of the more mild climates of the south. In the past, Merano was a popular place of residence for scientists, writers, and artists, who appreciated its mild climate. Historical and contemporary architecture are in perfect harmony here, with modern design hotels standing next to traditional buildings from the Belle Époque.
Fantastic hiking, cycling, and many water sport activities are all available, but the long tradition as a spa resort town is it’s true claim to fame.

Day 2 ~ Hiking around Merano
If you are taking a private trip, after breakfast you will meet with your Guide for a trip briefing. If you are taking a private self guided adventure, you will meet with a Dolomite Mountains representative who will provide a trip briefing and orientation, maps, and everything necessary for your self guided trip.

Immerse yourself in the city of Merano, walking past its arcades and colorful streets, discovering the secrets it has to offer. There are two fantastic hiking options for today. You can choose to do one or the other – or both!

Hiking Option 1 (shorter): The Sissi's Trail
The scenic Sissi's Trail leads visitors to the areas of Merano most beloved by Elisabeth, the Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, better known as Sissi. The Sissi's Trail is entirely dedicated to her, connecting the city center with the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle, passing by important cultural sights along the way.
(~1 hour easy hiking 3.2km / 2 miles, 110m / 360' ascent and 46m / 150' descent.)

Hiking Option 2 (longer): The Castle Trail
Another wonderful hike around Merano takes you through the center of town on the famous Panoramaweg trail, to the colorful and sunny village of Dorf-Tirol. On this hike you will not only admire the city of Merano from above, but have incredible vistas of the Adige Valley with its vineyards and apple plantations, as well as the opportunity to visit one of the most well preserved castles of the region: Schloss Tirol / Castel Tirolo. (~4-5 hours hiking 12km / 7.2 miles, 469m / 1,540' ascent and 474m / 1,554' descent.)

Day 3 ~ Bike in Val Venosta, from Resia/Malles to Merano
Vinschgau Valley (Val Venosta) is a true paradise for cyclists; whether mountain bikers or families pleasantly cycling through the orchards, Val Venosta offers something for everybody. Monuments of art history greet you from afar, but hidden gems of European class also wait for you to visit them.

In the morning, take the train from Merano to Malles, and a bus to Lake Resia, where you can rent your bike. Popular among leisure cyclists, the 82Km / 49,2 miles designated cycling route unfolds from Lake Resia 1,498m /4,913’ to Merano along the ancient Roman road ‘Via Claudia Augusta’. For the most part the route runs on flat terrain with gentle downhills, along the shore of San Valentino Lake and passing through several traditional small villages of South Tyrol: Burgusio/Burgeis, Malles/Mals with its seven Romanesque churches, and through the medieval town of Glorenza/Glurns. The route continues to Prad, the gateway to Stelvio National Park, the village of Lasa/Laas, then downhill to Covelano/Göflan and its apple orchards, to Laces/Latsch, with a final downhill to Merano/Meran. This cycling adventure can be shortened by using the efficient Venosta Valley railway system that operates regular services to Merano. Return to Merano and enjoy a relaxing evening at the Wellness centre of your hotel, or take a stroll along the charming town centre. (From Resia: 82km / 49,2 miles biking, 1,217m / 3,991’ descent. From Malles: 60km / 37 miles biking, 730m / 2,395’ ascent and descent. Option to shorten the ride by taking the train at one of the train stations along the ride).

Day 4 ~ Transfer to Riva del Garda, Lake Garda
After breakfast you’ll travel to Lake Garda by private taxi, or you have the option to take a bike ride to Bolzano along the Adige river past rolling hills, vineyards and apple groves. You’ll be able to drop your bike off in Bolzano, stroll through the town center and enjoy lunch in one of the delicious restaurants, before meeting your driver for your private transfer to Lake Garda.

Riva del Garda is a popular destination on Lake Garda and located in the most dramatic part of the Lake, the northern side, with mountain rising on either side or vertical cliffs. After Desenzano, Riva is the second largest town on the shores of the lake but it has a very different atmosphere, lively and outdoorsy. A pleasant base where tourists can stroll along winding streets and relax in waterfront squares.

But Riva isn't just about tourism - it was an important strategic point at the juncture of the Alps and the Italian plains for many centuries. Today Riva is still one of the most popular resorts on Lake Garda along with its neighboring towns of Torbole to the east and Arco to the north, especially loved by windsurfers, kitesurfers and rock climbers. Riva boasts superb scenery, elegant parks and a long lakeside promenade, the perfect starting point to explore Lake Garda.

Day 5 ~ Hike on Monte Baldo, from Tratto Spino to Monte Altissimo, Lake Garda
After breakfast, take a private transfer to the pictoresque town of Malcesine, at the foot of Monte Baldo.
The Monte Baldo mountain range extends for 30km / 18m from North to South, from the town of Torbole to Garda. Two thirds of it sits in the Veneto region and one thrid in the Trentino region. Officially referred to as 'the Garden of Italy', Monte Baldo enjoys an extraordinary biodiversity thanks to the microclimate influenced by Lake Garda and its sub-Mediterranean climate, growing into a more Alpine climate at 2200m / 7,220' and boasting a remarkable 50% of the Alpine flora.

A beautiful hike at the top of Monte Baldo mountain range is a must during your visit to Lake Garda. From the center of Malcesine take the two-stage cable-car to Tratto Spino (1,760m / 5,773') and enjoy the spectacular views of Lake Garda. Notice that the second stage of the cable-car rotates at 360° allowing everyone to enjoy full views of the surroundings. From the top station, take the left and follow path 651 to Monte Altissimo; the path unfolds on gentle grassy fields with stunning views of Arco, Riva and Torbole to the North, Peschiera and Desenzano to the South. Leaving the grassy fields, the trail winds its way through woods with regular viewpoints. Reach Rifugio Altissimo (2,060m / 6,757') and return to Tratto Spino on the same path.
(~6-7 hours hiking 14km / 8,4 miles, 1034m / 3,391’ ascent and descent.Shorter or alternative options available)

Day 6 ~ Lake tour by boat
Don't miss the chance to explore Lake Garda's most beautiful towns, packed with history and charm, boasting several well preserved Medieval castles and surrounded by lush green olive groves and mountains. Stroll through the colorful town-centers with their narrow streets, lined up with cafe's and ice-cream parlours, lively market-stalls and live music. Or just enjoy a typical Italian aperitif and watch the world go by. Visit the charming towns of Limone, Sirmione, Bardolino, Peschiera and Malcesine on this beautiful full day excursion.
