OVERVIEW

Our getaway trip in Val di Fassa is an abbreviated version of our Trek of the Legends trip – an extraordinary walking experience that helps you discover where the Ladin myths of the Dolomites were born. It is a circular trekking route of 200 kilometers (124 miles, or about 60 hours of walking), divided into 20 stages, that links the Val di Fassa with the Val di Fiemme and Primiero. Three of the six stages that are in the Val di Fassa are included in this fascinating itinerary. A wide range of mountain walks of all types that lead to King Laurin’s rose garden in the Catinaccio, wind amidst the rocks of the Marmolada glacier where one might hear Conturina sing, or take to the foot of the Sassolungo to listen to the twitter of a nightingale belonging to a legendary princess. A fairy tale experience that completes and enriches your holiday. It is also a fantastic opportunity to enjoy the so-called Enrosadira phenomenon, when, at sunset, the mountain rocks tale on a beautiful red hue.

The majestic Dolomite Mountains offer so many incredible areas to hike and explore, it’s hard to choose just one! But the advantage of selecting a single area for your trip is that you can get to know the area more intimately. That’s why we created our Hiking Getaway Around Val di Fassa – it’s the perfect way to explore the Val di Fassa area of the Dolomites, in just 5 days!

Day by Day

Experience 5 days of hiking around Val di Fassa, an incredible valley surrounded by a masterpiece of mountains! Hike the 3 of the 20 stages of the Trek of the Legends, across a variety of trails with incredible views, and legendary tales to accompany your journey!

Day 1 ~ Arrive in Val di Fassa
Arrive on your own in Val di Fassa (1,114m / 3,655'), and check-in into your hotel (private transfer available on request). The Val di Fassa, or Fassa Valley in English, is a fascinating natural valley set in the Italian province of Trento. The valley stretches 20-kilometers (12-miles), from Moena to Canazei, with a total of seven municipalities. This stunning Dolomites valley is surrounded by a “masterpiece” of mountains, including the Sella Group, Sassolungo, and Marmolada, home to the Dolomites largest remaining glacier, and the Catinaccio / Rosengarten with its remarkable Torri del Vajolet.

These mountains of culture, tradition, legend, and sport offer much to be discovered, and over time the Ladin people of Val di Fassa have guarded this valley of incomparable beauty. The kingdom of the legendary King Laurino was said to be set here, and the famous king was the guardian of this enchanted valley.

In the late afternoon (or on day 2 depending on your arrival) you will meet with a Dolomite Mountains representative who will provide you a trip briefing, a map and everything necessary for your self-guided adventure.

Day 2 ~ Discovering the Ladin Legends – Hiking at the Foot of the Queen of the Dolomites
Today is a great warm-up day, to wake up your legs after travel and help you acclimatize to the altitude.
After breakfast, take the cable-cars from Canazei to Pecol and hike to Passo Pordoi. From here you begin to hike on the “Viel del Pan” (“Way of the Bread”) to Passo Fedaia.
This footpath stretches right across the mountain, and was once used by flour merchants who traded flour for handcrafted goods and other products. It is a wide path, easy to walk, and is one of the most spectacular footpaths in the Dolomites – offering an incomparable view of the majestic Marmolada (3,342m / 10,964'). Oft referred to as “Queen of the Dolomites,” Marmolada is the highest mountain in this range, and home to its largest glacier.
When you reach Fedaia Lake, continue hiking along the lake to Fedaia Pass (2,057m / 6,749'), where you will spend the night.
(~5 hours hiking 11km / 6.8 miles, 470 m / 1,541’ ascent, 650m / 2,135’ descent.)

Day 3 ~ Malga Ciapela – Rifugio Falier – Passo de Ombreta
In the morning take a private transfer to Malga Ciapela and hike west along the river Torrente Pettorina. The trail climbs steadily through thick forest to reach pasture clearings. After you pass the farm Malga Ciapela Agriturismo, the uphill section begins in earnest, and then becomes easier as you reach Malga Ombreta (1,904m / 6,246'). This farm marks the entrance to Valle Ombreta, the “Valley of Shade,” named for its position in the shadows of Marmolada to the north. At the end of the valley you will reach to Rifugio Onorio Falier (2,074m / 6,804'), right under the imposing south walls of the Marmolada, with fantastic views eastwards of the Civetta and Pelmo Groups. Hike up to Passo de Ombreta (2,702m / 8,864'), and then descend to your rifugio (2,016m / 6,614') for tonight.
(7-8 hours hiking ~10 km / 6.2 miles, 1,340 m / 4,400' ascent, 765 m / 2,510' descent.)

Day 4 ~ Val de le Cirele traverse to Passo San Pellegrino
From your rifugio, walk on green pastures and woods towards the east. The path soon leads over a steep rocky area and then reaches a large crater, the Val de le Cirele, continuing to the Pas de le Cirele (2,683m / 8,802'), between the Cima dell’Uomo group and Punta Zigole. From here, descend on numerous hairpin turns into the dramatic Valle di Tasca. This has to be the best scree slope in the Dolomites, with stones just the right size to make this a memorable, effortless, and extremely enjoyable descent! Reach the green oasis of Fuciade (1,982m / 6,502') and have a private transfer to Val di Fassa, where you will spend the night.
(5 hours hiking ~ 10 km / 6.2 miles, 750m / 2,460' ascent, 800m / 2,624' descent.)

Want to learn more about our Mountain Inns & Rifugi?
Rifugi – or mountain huts in English – are the classic accommodation for hikers, climbers, mountaineers, and ski mountaineers in the Alps. Set in spectacular locations high in the Dolomites, rifugi are accessible only on foot (with a few exceptions that are reachable by car). These marvelous establishments are open primarily in the summer, with a select few in winter, and offer meals and sleeping facilities.

The Dolomite rifugi are considered the best in the Alps. While some are dormitory style with bunk beds, many meet the standard of a simple guest house with private rooms and en-suite bathrooms, and each has its own unique character and charm. Bedding and linens are provided, hot showers are available, and meals are served in common dining areas – like a small mountain inn set high in the mountains with the most incredible vistas in the Dolomites. Whether you’re hiking in summer or skiing in winter, an overnight rifugio stay is not to miss on a Dolomite holiday.
