OVERVIEW

On this hiking adventure, you’ll get an in-depth taste of one of the most well known areas of the Dolomites – Cortina d’Ampezzo. You’ll explore Cortina’s natural highlights on foot – including hiking around Tre Cime di Lavaredo, perhaps the best most recognizable trio of peaks in the Dolomites, and taking in some of the best vistas of the red-stained Croda Rossa Mountain. You’ll travel from hut to hut, experiencing the welcoming hospitality and incredible hearty meals of traditional Dolomites cooking. And travel near the Austrian border, experience ruins of the WWI conflict and the Italian and Austrian involvement. Plus you’ll begin and finish your trip in the charming alpine resort town Cortina d’Ampezzo itself!

The majestic Dolomite Mountains offer so many incredible areas to hike and explore, it’s hard to choose just one! But the advantage of selecting a single area for your trip is that you can get to know the area more intimately. That’s why we created our Hiking Around the 3 Cime di Lavaredo & Fanes-Sennes-Braies Natural Park – it’s the perfect way to explore the Cortina area of the Dolomites, in just 6 days!

Day by Day

Explore Cortina d’Ampezzo, one of the best-known regions of the Dolomites, on this 6-day hiking adventure! Hike amidst glorious landscapes of pillars, pinnacles, and colossal rock walls, and enjoy the welcoming hospitality of a different cozy mountain inn each night!

Day 1 ~ Arrive in Cortina d'Ampezzo
Arrive in Cortina d’Ampezzo (1,224m / 4,016') on your own and check into your 3-star hotel (private transfer available on request). Cortina d’Ampezzo is a charming alpine resort town surrounded by stunning peaks. Host to the 1956 Winter Olympics, Cortina enjoys a reputation for great skiing in winter, and in the summer attracts hikers and climbers who challenge the rocky faces of the nearby mountains.

In the afternoon, meet with your guide (or a Dolomite Mountains representative for self guided trips) who will provide a trip briefing and orientation.

Day 2 ~ Tre Cime di Lavaredo
Today starts with a scenic 30-minute private transfer up to Rifugio Auronzo (2,320m / 7,612'), from where you will begin your hike around Tre Cime di Lavaredo. The Sesto Group of mountains that encompass Tre Cime are practically bisected by the administrative border between Italy’s German-speaking south Tyrol and the predominantly Italian Veneto region – the frontier between Hapsburg Austria and Italy until 1918. The entire range was involved in the First World War, and wherever you turn are trench systems that were dug by hand out of the rough dolomite surface by platoons of soldiers, with defensive barricades of stones then heaped up around them.
From Rifugio Auronzo, you’ll hike a crescent around the east side of Tre Cime, on a moonlike landscape of dolomitic rock and scree, with incredible vistas of Tre Cime and the Sesto Group throughout. Reach Rifugio Locatelli and hike northeast: you will descend from the rocky world of the high peaks, past clear, blue-tinted streams coursing across the dolomite rock, and down through patches of forest to a cozy mountain rifugio where you will spend the night. (5-6 hours hiking 10km / 6 miles, 442m / 1,451' ascent, 1,114m / 3,655' descent.)

Day 3 ~ Baranci Group
Today you’ll hike to the south of the Baranci Group of mountains, also in the Dolomiti di Sesto, which reach heights of 2,966 meters (9,730'). You’ll walk on the “Sentiero Italia,” and head west toward Capanna Rienza. Hike down to the town of Landro, and to the Hotel Drei Zinnen Blick (1,400m / 4,593'). After a stop for lunch, continue on a path near the main road, and then along the west side of the Strudelkopf (2,308m / 7,572'), passing a light woods with a challenging ascent. Once out of the woods, it is possible to admire the Cristallino Group (3,008m / 9,869') to the south. Continue to the Vallandro Fort, an Austrian ruin from WWI, and on to your rifugio for tonight. Here your long hiking day will be rewarded with fantastic views of the Croda Rossa and the Cristallo Group right in front of you! (6-7 hours hiking 15,7km / 9,8 miles, 1,769m / 5,807' ascent, 1,370m / 4,497' descent.)

Day 4  ~ Hike the Dolomiti d’Ampezzo and Fanes-Sennes-Braies Natural Parks
Today’s rewarding hike constitutes an especially panoramic diagonal crossing of the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Natural Park. New landscapes are revealed every step of the way and there are ample opportunities to see wildlife including marmots, ibex, and chamois – an antelope-like mountain goat native to Europe. Highlights en route are the spectacular section below the northern face of Croda Rossa (2,818m / 9,245') and Prato Piazza (1,993m / 6,539'), set in an idyllic high-altitude valley pasture. This hike has one of the best vantage points for viewing the Croda Rossa (Rote Wand in German, or Red Mountain in English), so-called for the blood-red color of the rock which due to the presence of iron oxide. Enjoy your stay tonight at a family run mountain rifugio (1,980m / 6,496’). (7-8 hours hiking 20km / 12,4 miles, 1,236m / 4,054' ascent, 1,133m / 3,719' descent.)
B,D…. Rifugio

Day 5 ~ Return to Cortina
From the rifugio, hike to Rifugio Ra Stua (1,688m / 5,538') and from here follow the path to the ruins of Castel S. Uberto. A hike along the Boite River, which has an enchanting blue-grey color from the water rushing across the dolomitic rock, leads you back to the town of Cortina d’Ampezzo. (5-6 hours hiking 23km / 14,5miles, 447m / 1,467' ascent, 1,363m / 4,474' descent.)

Want to learn more about our Mountain Inns & Rifugi?
Rifugi – or mountain huts in English – are the classic accommodation for hikers, climbers, mountaineers, and ski mountaineers in the Alps. Set in spectacular locations high in the Dolomites, rifugi are accessible only on foot (with a few exceptions that are reachable by car). These marvelous establishments are open primarily in the summer, with a select few in winter, and offer meals and sleeping facilities.

The Dolomite rifugi are considered the best in the Alps. While some are dormitory style with bunk beds, many meet the standard of a simple guest house with private rooms and en-suite bathrooms, and each has its own unique character and charm. Bedding and linens are provided, hot showers are available, and meals are served in common dining areas – like a small mountain inn set high in the mountains with the most incredible vistas in the Dolomites. Whether you’re hiking in summer or skiing in winter, an overnight rifugio stay is not to miss on a Dolomite holiday.
