Dolomites Alta Via Treks

Hiking Alta Via N.9 of the Dolomites

Hike a striking section of Alta Via 9, traversing dramatic landscapes between Ortisei and Col di Lana. Discover the Rosengarten, Alpe di Siusi, Sella, and Marmolada massifs, staying in scenic rifugios as you follow WWI trails across the heart of the Dolomites.

Trip Overview

This seven-day trek follows one of the Dolomites' lesser-known but most scenic long-distance trails – Alta Via 9, also known as the "Transverse Trail." Beginning in Ortisei in Val Gardena, you'll hike through ever-changing landscapes rich in alpine and cultural heritage. The route first enters the Rosengarten range via Val Ciamin, famed for its flaming sunsets and dramatic limestone towers.

You'll ridge-walk above the Alpe di Siusi, Europe's largest alpine pasture, surrounded by the jagged Sciliar and Denti di Terrarossa. The path continues toward the Sella Massif, where you'll traverse its massive south face with unforgettable views of the Marmolada, Tofane, and Antelao peaks. From here, descend into wildflower-filled pastures on the Pralongià Plateau and discover WWI trenches and fortifications scattered across the Setsass.

The journey concludes with an ascent of Cima Sief and Col di Lana – once the site of fierce WWI battles and now a peaceful summit with panoramic views stretching to the Austrian border. Each evening, you'll relax in welcoming mountain rifugi or traditional hotels in Ortisei and Arabba, enjoying hearty local cuisine and South Tyrolean hospitality.

Alta Via 9 is a rewarding route for experienced hikers seeking immersion in untamed beauty, rich history, and the rugged grandeur of the Dolomites. Book your journey along the wild Alta Via 9 and step into a wild and wonderful history across the peaks!

Want to learn more about our Mountain Inns & Rifugios?
Rifugios – or mountain huts in English – are the classic accommodation for hikers, climbers, mountaineers, and ski mountaineers in the Alps. Set in spectacular locations high in the Dolomites, rifugios are accessible only on foot (with a few exceptions that are reachable by car). These marvelous establishments are open primarily in the summer, with a select few in winter, and offer meals and sleeping facilities.

The Dolomite rifugios are considered the best in the Alps. While some are dormitory style with bunk beds, many meet the standard of a simple guest house with private rooms and en-suite bathrooms, and each has its own unique character and charm. Bedding and linens are provided, hot showers are available, and meals are served in common dining areas – like a small mountain inn set high in the mountains with the most incredible vistas in the Dolomites. Whether you’re hiking in summer or skiing in winter, an overnight rifugio stay is not to miss on a Dolomite holiday.
