Dolomites Cross-Country Ski

Cross-Country Ski Tour in the Dolomites

Cross-country ski beneath the towering walls of the Dolomites, gliding over perfectly groomed tracks, taking in the breathtaking beauty of the South Tyrol. Whether you stride or skate, you’ll feel the championship history of the region beneath your feet as you explore the Dolomiti Nordicski!

Trip Overview

Not a downhill skier? No problem! On this fabulous itinerary you’ll get to ski the Dolomites – across the terrain, rather than down. The beautiful Nordic sport of cross-country skiing lets you glide over perfectly groomed trails, beneath the breathtaking and imposing walls of the Dolomite Mountains. In winter, the landscape of these majestic peaks becomes a fairyland covered in snow. Whether you ski across meadows, through wooded forests, or alongside a lake or a stream, you’re sure to be enchanted by the Dolomite Mountains winter landscape.
Cross-country is the oldest type of skiing, emerging from the need to travel over snow-covered terrain. Although the first races were held in Norway in 1767, it did not develop into a sport until the end of the 19th century. Classic cross-country skiing, also known as striding, came first; it wasn’t until the early 1980s that the newer skating or freestyle technique took hold, as a more challenging but faster alternative to striding. As a sport, cross-country skiing is one of the most difficult in terms of endurance. It requires use of every major muscle group, and it, along with running, rowing, and swimming, is one of the sports that burn the most calories per hour in execution.  No other winter sport provides such a great opportunity for fitness and conditioning – at any age! But at the same time, it is one of the most beautiful to experience. Gliding across the snow at your own pace, whether for fitness or for relaxation, you’re sure to revel in the incredible mountains that surround you.
Whether you choose to stride or skate, on this week-long itinerary you’ll ski at the Nordic resorts of Alta Badia, Cortina d’Ampezzo, Antholzertal, and Alta Pusteria – the stronghold of Italian cross-country skiing. This vast network of trails offers hundreds of miles of perfectly groomed terrain – plenty of trails to explore!  Still want more?  You can even ski across the border into Austria’s East Tyrolean network of tracks if you so desire!

  • Explore the Dolomites’ 231 cross-country ski tracks, comprising over 1,280 kilometers (795 miles) of trails, perfectly groomed for both classic (stride) and skate (free) skiing
  • Enjoy luxury spa accommodations throughout, where you can soothe weary muscles at the end of each day skiing
  • Experience the delightful blend of Italian, Austrian, and Ladin cultures and cuisine that co-exist in this region
  • Self guided trips are a great way to experience the culture and beauty of the Dolomites at your own pace, but with the peace of mind that comes from having everything perfectly arranged for you!
