Dolomites Hikes

South Tyrol Hiking Tour of Chestnut Trails, Dolomites' Peaks and Villages

Explore three beautiful South Tyrolean valleys on this seven-day hiking adventure. Discover the medieval streets of Bressanone, the towering rock walls of Val di Funes, and the high passes of Marebbe.

Trip Overview

What do a 1,100-year-old cathedral city, a chestnut-shaded medieval trail, and the northernmost summit of the Dolomites have in common? They're all stops on this unforgettable seven-day hiking journey through the valleys of South Tyrol.

You'll begin in Bressanone/Brixen (560m / 1,837'), one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in the Alps, where baroque castles and medieval cloisters frame the confluence of two mountain rivers. Then, lace up your boots for a legendary trail – following ancient footpaths through chestnut groves from the cliff-top of an evocative monastery above Chiusa back down to Bressanone. You’ll explore one of the most photographed landscapes in the world: Val di Funes. Here, the Puez-Geisler/Odle Group rises to 3,025 meters (9,925 feet) above the valley in a cathedral of pale Dolomite walls, and you can hike another famous trail directly beneath those walls, surrounded by alpine wildflowers and breathtaking mountain serenity.

Part of what makes this trip so special is the hike along the Odle di Eores ridge to a traditional rifugio where you’ll spend the night and have the authentic mountain hut experience. You’ll hike the spectacular loop around Sass de Putia (2,875m / 9,432'), the northernmost summit of the Dolomites and one of South Tyrol's most celebrated hikes, after which a private transfer brings you to San Vigilio di Marebbe, your base for the final two nights. You’ll then venture deep into the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Natural Park, climbing to the summit of Lavinores (2,462m / 8,077') for an unobstructed 360-degree panorama of the Tofane, the Croda Rossa, Cortina d'Ampezzo, and the snow-capped peaks of Austria.

We think this incredible itinerary offers the best of both worlds – not only will you get to explore the towering cliffs of the Dolomites, carved over millennia by the elements, but also the towering spires of cathedrals and castles. And we can’t forget South Tyrol’s unique culture. Warm, generous hospitality serving some of the most delicious mountain cuisine. It’s almost like two trips in one!

Three valleys, five celebrated trails, one medieval city, and one unforgettable rifugio night. Join Dolomite Mountains and discover the real South Tyrol.

Want to learn more about our Mountain Inns & Rifugi?
Rifugi – or mountain huts in English – are the classic accommodation for hikers, climbers, mountaineers, and ski mountaineers in the Alps. Set in spectacular locations high in the Dolomites, rifugi are accessible only on foot (with a few exceptions that are reachable by car). These marvelous establishments are open primarily in the summer, with a select few in winter, and offer meals and sleeping facilities.

The Dolomite rifugi are considered the best in the Alps. While some are dormitory style with bunk beds, many meet the standard of a simple guest house with private rooms and en-suite bathrooms, and each has its own unique character and charm. Bedding and linens are provided, hot showers are available, and meals are served in common dining areas – like a small mountain inn set high in the mountains with the most incredible vistas in the Dolomites. Whether you’re hiking in summer or skiing in winter, an overnight rifugio stay is not to miss on a Dolomite holiday.
