Trip Overview

The Sentiero Italia, or Grand Italian Trail, is one of the world’s longest and most spectacular hiking routes, stretching for about 7,850 kilometers (4,875 miles) through the Alps, Apennines, Sicily, and Sardinia. In the Dolomites, it unveils some of the most breathtaking mountain scenery on Earth, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that unfolds across striking limestone peaks, expansive alpine meadows, and valleys rich in history and tradition.
This 9-day journey begins in Val Gardena, at the foot of Sassolungo and the Sella Massif. From here, ascend into the Sciliar-Catinaccio Natural Park, where sunset lights up the Rosengarten, “rose garden” in German, in delicate shades of pink. This phenomenon, known as Enrosadira, has captivated mountaineers and dreamers for centuries. Traverse the panoramic Alpe di Siusi ridge, circle the giants of Sassopiatto and Sassolungo, and gain a new perspective each day. Views of Marmolada, the “Queen of the Dolomites,” dominate the horizon; wild ridges such as Viel del Pan trace ancient trade routes, while the rugged Val Travenanzes whispers stories from World War I. Evenings bring cozy rifugios, authentic mountain cuisine, and awe-inspiring views few ever witness.
The trek concludes at Lake Misurina, with Cristallo and the Tre Cime di Lavaredo rising above. It’s a finish that unites the Dolomites’ beauty, culture, and spirit of adventure in one unforgettable journey.
From Val Gardena to the Sciliar-Catinaccio Natural Park, Sassolungo and Sassopiatto, Viel del Pan, Città dei Sassi (“City of Stones”), Alta Badia, and Pralongià, Setsas, Lagazuoi, Val di Landro, and Lake Misurina, to name a few, each stage reveals a masterpiece of nature and heritage.

Accommodation

Great hotels with Dolomite Mountains. Whether intimate lodge, family run B&B, or luxury spa resort, our hotels are unique, eminently local, and hard to leave.

Want to learn more about our Hotels and B&Bs?
The Dolomites has a multi-faceted culture and history that is reflected in each village we visit, and we make sure to provide you with the most authentic experience of the region possible through the hotels and B&Bs we offer. Hotels and chalets are available in the larger villages, while agriturismos (working farms with accommodations similar to B&Bs) are more common in rural areas. And we always make sure you have access to inspired regional cuisine and the best panoramas you can get in the Dolomites!

Want to learn more about our Mountain Inns & Rifugios?
Rifugios – or mountain huts in English – are the classic accommodation for hikers, climbers, mountaineers, and ski mountaineers in the Alps. Set in spectacular locations high in the Dolomites, rifugios are accessible only on foot (with a few exceptions that are reachable by car). These marvelous establishments are open primarily in the summer, with a select few in winter, and offer meals and sleeping facilities.

While some are dormitory style with bunk beds, many meet the standard of a simple guest house with private rooms and en-suite bathrooms, and each has its own unique character and charm. Bedding and linens are provided, hot showers are available, and meals are served in common dining areas – like a small mountain inn set high in the mountains with the most incredible vistas in the Dolomites. Whether you’re hiking in summer or skiing in winter, an overnight rifugio stay is not to miss on a Dolomite holiday.
