Trip Overview
Piz Boé sits at 3,152m / 10,341' at the very crown of the Sella Massif. On a clear day from its summit, you can see the Marmolada glacier, the Civetta, the Tofane group, and, on the best of days, peaks reaching north into Austria. Getting there with a UIAGM/IFMGA mountain guide who knows every meter of the path is the centerpiece of this five-day Alta Badia getaway.
The adventure opens with Via Ferrata Tridentina where the route scales the Torre Exner on the east face of the Sella walls — waterfalls below, cables overhead —before arriving at its most dramatic moment: a suspension bridge crossing a deep crevasse high above the valley. You then descend to your rifugio perched on a natural rock balcony above the massif for your first authentic rifugio night.
Next, the summit route leads through the Valun dl Pisciadù, past ibex grazing on the plateau, along the high flanks of the Sella, and then up a final scree ascent to the top. You'll relax and enjoy a mouthwatering lunch at a rifugio, just below the summit, and take in the 360-degree panorama. The next Via Ferrata is shorter, less visited, and so underrated. It winds through chimneys, ledges, and iron ladders to a summit at 2,911m / 9,550' with views straight down the Val Mesdì and across to the full sweep of the Sella Group, which you often have entirely for yourself!
Alta Badia reflects its Italian, German, and Ladin cultures in its food, architecture, and traditions. Evenings are for the Ladin table: food built for altitude, where humble ingredients are lovingly elevated. Try panicia, a slow-cooked barley and smoked pork shank soup that has warmed hikers for generations; cajincí, hand-rolled pasta pockets stuffed with ricotta and spinach, finished with beurre noisette; and Tutres, golden fried pastries filled with sauerkraut or creamy cheese, best eaten hot from the kitchen. Add a small glass of local grappa, distilled with mountain pine or juniper, and it's a dining experience you won't forget. Your equipment, lift tickets, private transfers, and a certified mountain guide are all included and waiting! So, are you ready to stand on the Sella Massif?

Want to learn more about our Mountain Inns & Rifugi?
Rifugi – or mountain huts in English – are the classic accommodation for hikers, climbers, mountaineers, and ski mountaineers in the Alps. Set in spectacular locations high in the Dolomites, rifugi are accessible only on foot (with a few exceptions that are reachable by car). These marvelous establishments are open primarily in the summer, with a select few in winter, and offer meals and sleeping facilities.
The Dolomite rifugi are considered the best in the Alps. While some are dormitory style with bunk beds, many meet the standard of a simple guest house with private rooms and en-suite bathrooms, and each has its own unique character and charm. Bedding and linens are provided, hot showers are available, and meals are served in common dining areas – like a small mountain inn set high in the mountains with the most incredible vistas in the Dolomites. Whether you’re hiking in summer or skiing in winter, an overnight rifugio stay is not to miss on a Dolomite holiday.
