Dolomites Quick Getaways

Puez-Odle Hiking Getaway

Enjoy a five-day moderate to challenging tour of the Dolomites, hiking hut-to-hut through peaks and valleys in this beautiful mountain range. Designed for sure-footed hikers, you’ll travel across rocky landscapes and rolling pastures, experiencing the variety of terrain of the Puez Odle / Geisler Natural Park.

Trip Overview

Imagine what it would be like to walk on the moon… or along the floor of the ocean… On this unique itinerary you’ll have plenty of inspiration to daydream about both! This trip is set entirely in the Dolomites’ Puez-Odle Nature Park, where you’ll hike hut-to-hut across lunar landscapes strewn with moon-like boulders, and beneath escarpments of dolomitic rock formed ages ago deep in the sea.

Puez-Odle Natural Park (Naturpark Puez-Geisler in German) offers a unique look into the history of the rock formations that make up the Dolomites, including the sedimentary formations and strata of shallow marine origin, as well as rocks shaped by erosion. There is an abundance of fossils found here, which provide insight into the various epochs of the earth's history. Not surprisingly, given the name of these mountains, Dolomite is the primary sedimentary rock found in the park. Formed of a near-white crystalline mineral, Dolomite was named after the French geologist Deodat de Dolomieu, who was the first to describe the chemical composition of the rock in 1789.

Designed for sure-footed hikers, this trip will take you across a variety of terrain within the park, including challenging rocky, moon-like landscapes, as well as gentle, old farm tracks through beautiful green valleys. You’ll hike on a lovely section of the Alta Via 2, one of the beautiful “high routes” of the Dolomites that traverse these mountains from north to south, and hike a horseshoe around the eastern side of Sass de Putia / Peitlerkofel – the northernmost summit of the Dolomites!

Highlights

  • Hike through Puez-Odle Natural Park, across lunar landscapes, with vistas created by former sea beds eroded through time
  • Hike from hut-to-hut – mountain rifugios that seem to be placed at the perfect interval, appearing right when you are ready for an espresso or plate of speck!
  • Hike a section of the Alta Via 2, one of the eight Dolomite “High Routes,” and one of the most beautiful, diverse, and challenging trails in the Dolomites
  • Short on time? This is the perfect quick way to experience the Dolomites on foot, exploring its vast variety of terrain!

Want to learn more about our Mountain Inns & Rifugi?

Rifugi – or mountain huts in English – are the classic accommodation for hikers, climbers, mountaineers, and ski mountaineers in the Alps. Set in spectacular locations high in the Dolomites, rifugi are accessible only on foot (with a few exceptions that are reachable by car). These marvelous establishments are open primarily in the summer, with a select few in winter, and offer meals and sleeping facilities.

The Dolomite rifugi are considered the best in the Alps. While some are dormitory style with bunk beds, many meet the standard of a simple guest house with private rooms and en-suite bathrooms, and each has its own unique character and charm. Bedding and linens are provided, hot showers are available, and meals are served in common dining areas – like a small mountain inn set high in the mountains with the most incredible vistas in the Dolomites. Whether you’re hiking in summer or skiing in winter, an overnight rifugio stay is not to miss on a Dolomite holiday.
