Trail Running the Alta Via N.2 of the Dolomites – Getaway

Five days on the legendary Alta Via 2 – the "High Route of Legends" – running across the Sella Massif, above the Marmolada glacier, and through the UNESCO heart of the Dolomites. The perfect taste of the Alta Via for those short on time, but not on ambition.

Trip Overview

The Alta Via 2 carries the title "Alta Via delle Leggende" – the High Route of Legends – and it earns it. Running at sustained altitude across some of the most dramatic terrain in the Dolomites, this legendary route links the great massifs of the central range in a journey that demands fitness, rewards curiosity, and leaves an impression that lasts far longer than five days. This getaway version distills those legends into a perfectly formed adventure.

The route opens in Alta Badia, the Ladin heart of the South Tyrolean Dolomites, with a warm-up day through the Puez-Odle Nature Park – a UNESCO World Heritage Site where rock strata tilted at impossible angles, ancient fossils embedded in the cliffs, and sweeping views across to the Marmolada and Civetta tell the geological story of the entire range. You'll then traverse the Sella Massif, a fortress-shaped giant dominating the central Dolomites, climbing to Piz Boè (3,152m / 10,341'), its highest point, for a 360-degree panorama that takes in nearly every major peak in the range. The descent follows the ancient Viel del Pan – the "Way of the Bread" – a broad, historic path that has connected the Fassa and Agordo valleys for centuries, with the Marmolada (3,343m / 10,964'), the Queen of the Dolomites and home to its largest remaining glacier, filling the southern horizon.

The final running day moves through the wild Valle Ombreta, where you'll find summer grazing ground for sheep, goats, and marmots, before a memorable descent on arguably the finest scree slope in the Dolomites to the green oasis of Fuciade (1,982m / 6,502'), and a private transfer to your hotel for a well-earned final evening.

Want to learn more about our Mountain Inns & Rifugios?
Rifugios – or mountain huts in English – are the classic accommodation for hikers, climbers, mountaineers, and ski mountaineers in the Alps. Set in spectacular locations high in the Dolomites, rifugios are accessible only on foot (with a few exceptions that are reachable by car). These marvelous establishments are open primarily in the summer, with a select few in winter, and offer meals and sleeping facilities.

The Dolomite rifugios are considered the best in the Alps. While some are dormitory style with bunk beds, many meet the standard of a simple guest house with private rooms and en-suite bathrooms, and each has its own unique character and charm. Bedding and linens are provided, hot showers are available, and meals are served in common dining areas – like a small mountain inn set high in the mountains with the most incredible vistas in the Dolomites. Whether you’re hiking in summer or skiing in winter, an overnight rifugio stay is not to miss on a Dolomite holiday.
