Hike Sardinia from Mountain to Sea

Discover Sardinia’s mountain trails, coastal tracks, and incredible beaches on this moderate to challenging hiking itinerary. Hike in the Supramonte Mountains, where narrow gorges and hidden canyons climb to ancient relics, and descend to the incredible white sand beaches and turquoise waters of the Orosei Gulf.

Trip Overview

Discover Sardinia – a land with mountains are as tall as the surrounding seas are deep, and everything from ancient cultures to beautiful beaches can be explored from the comfort of modern accommodations.

On this moderate to challenging hiking itinerary, you’ll explore southeastern Sardinia from bases in two different villages – Oliena, set slightly inland, at the foot of the Supramonte Massif, and Santa Maria Navarrese, a coastal village set right on the sea. You’ll hike into the heart of the Supramonte, a rugged and rough mountain area, where still many secrets are concealed. Walk through narrow and spectacular valleys and gorges, and high atop mountains, where you will find the ancient hidden city of the Nuraghe people. And you’ll walk along Sardinia’s tall sea cliffs that rise 800 meters (2,625') from the sea, and explore the incredible white sand and pebble beaches and clear blue green waters that lie beneath.

The Orosei coastline is one of the most dramatic coastlines of the Mediterranean, 40 kilometers (25 miles) long, spreading north from Santa Maria Navarese to Cala Luna. The Royal eagle, the Queen hawk, the Corsican sea-gull, and the Bonelli eagle all live here, considering it the perfect home. Oak and Juniper trees, Syrian pines, and broom brush and gorse cover the hillsides, providing a rich green Mediterranean contrast to the bright limestone plunging into the blue sea.
The landscape of the wonderful Supramonte Mountains are home to one of the deepest gorges in all of Europe. Thousands of mysterious Nuraghe villages and towers, scattered over this island, tell us of ancient times and ancient cultures that once ruled Sardinia. Sardinia’s east coast and interior are one of the last wilderness sanctuaries on the entire Mediterranean Sea. Southeastern Sardinia offers a wonderful harmony between mountain and sea, just waiting for you to come experience it!

About Dolomite Mountains Trips in Sardinia

From sandy shorelines eroded by the intense blue waters of the Mediterranean, to peaks and colorful landscapes in its interior, Sardinia is perfect for active and leisure vacations alike! The largest of the Italian islands, and the second largest of the Mediterranean, Sardinia offers hikers coastal trails and mountain tracks alike! The unique combination of beautiful coastline, pleasant climate, rich history, and diverse culture make Sardinia ripe for adventure. Its coasts are lined with white sand beaches, towering Limestone cliffs in fantastic shades of purple, gray, and black, and caves full of stalactites and stalagmites, surrounded by the blue green waters of the Sardinian sea.

Away from the shore is a harshly beautiful, wild landscape, characterized by mountain chains, forests, plateaus, and rivers. And everywhere on Sardinia there are traces of human settlements, ancient and rich in history and legends, dating as far back as the Neolithic Age. And did we mention the food!?  Not surprisingly, seafood figures prominently in Sardinian cuisine, as does wild boar, stews, and unusual pastas waiting to be discovered. Exploring the island never ceases to be extraordinary. What are you waiting for?
