Sardinia

OLD: Classic Sardinia: Hiking & Leisure /// REPLACED BY: Sardinia Family – Active & Leisure Adventure

Combine active adventure hiking Sardinia’s mountain trails, with leisurely days relaxing on incredible beaches! Discover one of the deepest gorges in all of Europe, ancient stone towers used by Sardinians to defend the island from invaders, and the idyllic La Maddalena archipelago.

Trip Overview

Think of a vacation relaxing next to the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean. And a vacation hiking through beautiful mountains, discovering cultural artifacts that date back before the Romans. And experiencing a unique style of Italian cuisine, that feels both familiar, yet distinctly different. Sardinia offers all of this – and more! On our Hiking and Leisure in Sardinia itinerary, you’ll explore both the mountainous interior of the island, and the beautiful Costa Smerelda, or Emerald Coast, to its north.

During the first part of your trip, explore the Supramonte Massif. The landscape here on the east side of the island is one of the last wilderness sanctuaries on the entire Mediterranean Sea.

After you’ve had your fill of hiking and exploration, shift gears to the leisure part of your vacation! Relax on the beaches of Isola La Maddalena, the largest island in the Sardinian Maddalena archipelago. This group of 62 islands and islets make up an archipelago located to the northeast of Sardinia, and offers some of the most crystal clear waters in the entire Mediterranean. A road runs around the perimeter, offering 45 kilometers (27 miles) of breath-taking panoramas. Granite and porphyry mark out jagged areas, coves, inlets, and turquoise sandy beaches, while the inland areas are made of gentle hills. Not only will you get your requisite beach time in, you’ll spend a day exploring hidden coves and turquoise waters aboard a tall sailing ship!

Last but not least, did we mention the food!?  Suckling pig and wild boar are culturally more dominant, roasted on the spit or boiled in stews of beans and vegetables. Unusual pastas from malloreddus to fregula to pillus are here, just waiting to be discovered. Spices, mushrooms, cheeses, olive oils, local wine… exploring the island’s traditional cuisine never ceases to be extraordinary.

About Dolomite Mountains Trips in Sardinia

From sandy shorelines eroded by the intense blue waters of the Mediterranean, to peaks and colorful landscapes in its interior, Sardinia is perfect for active and leisure vacations alike! The largest of the Italian islands, and the second largest of the Mediterranean, Sardinia offers hikers coastal trails and mountain tracks alike! The unique combination of beautiful coastline, pleasant climate, rich history, and diverse culture make Sardinia ripe for adventure. Its coasts are lined with white sand beaches, towering Limestone cliffs in fantastic shades of purple, gray, and black, and caves full of stalactites and stalagmites, surrounded by the blue green waters of the Sardinian sea.

Away from the shore is a harshly beautiful, wild landscape, characterized by mountain chains, forests, plateaus, and rivers. And everywhere on Sardinia there are traces of human settlements, ancient and rich in history and legends, dating as far back as the Neolithic Age. And did we mention the food!?  Not surprisingly, seafood figures prominently in Sardinian cuisine, as does wild boar, stews, and unusual pastas waiting to be discovered. Exploring the island never ceases to be extraordinary. What are you waiting for?
