This itinerary is a wonderful way of experiencing this Winter wonderland and a great alternative to skiing using shoes with ancient origins.

Trip Overview

Due to their structure and their composition, the Dolomites are incredibly unique. Some 200 million years ago, in a shallow sea that geologists refer to as Tetide, coral reefs began to form in the warm, agitated waters. With the impact of the African and European continents, the sea bottom was gradually lowering, and the coral, seaweed, and a myriad of tiny organisms continued to rise to stay close to the light. It was this rising of the sediments which formed the Dolomites, and this movement has still not finished. Over the course of millions of years, the mountains were exposed to thunderstorms and various ice ages. Due to this exposure, the rocks were slowly worn down layer by layer through the impact of water, ice, and wind. This is how the bizarre and fascinating shapes were formed.
The name "Dolomites"  first appeared almost 200 years ago, receiving their name in honor of the French geologist Deodat de Dolomieu, who was the first to get this type of limestone analyzed and then established a chemical formula: calcium magnesium carbonate.
On this easy, fun-filled itinerary, you get to snowshoe your way through these amazing mountains and partake in the best of the best culture, cuisine, and hospitality. So, strap on those snowshoes and get cracking!
