OVERVIEW

Alpe di Siusi is Europe's largest and most beautiful high-altitude plateau, where its breath-taking views and natural charm are waiting for you. Every year, between May and July, nature blossoms yet again in this magnificent high alpine meadow, in a spectacle that is a jubilation of shapes, scents, and colors that seems to have been created by an artist or conjured up by a sorcerer. The extraordinary plant life on these upland pastures can be fully admired in mid-summer, and the spectacular wild flowers – including crocus, lilies, and columbines – never fail to impress. The incomparable beauty and incredible variety of Alpe di Siusi's flora and fauna are truly unique in the world!

Several hundred meters above the meadows rises the superb Sciliar Dolomite plateau. The Sciliar originated from ancient coral reefs, and provides striking contrast to the lush green meadows beneath. The irresistible charm of this special environment will surely entice you to go hike and explore, or just relax and admire the splendor of the surrounding natural wonderland.

The majestic Dolomite Mountains offer so many incredible areas to hike and explore, it’s hard to choose just one! But the advantage of selecting a single area for your trip is that you can get to know the area more intimately. That’s why we created our Hiking Around Alpe di Siusi – it’s the perfect way to explore this stunning area of the Dolomites, in 5 days!

Day by Day

Explore Alpe di Siusi on this 5-day adventure! Hike through vast meadows on the largest, most beautiful high-altitude plateau in all of Europe with breathtaking vistas of the surrounding peaks of the South Tyrolean Dolomites.

Day 1 ~ Arrive in Val Gardena
Arrive in Val Gardena / Gröden (~1,500m / 5,000') on your own and check into your hotel (private transfer available on request). The Gardena valley is best known for skiing and rock climbing, and woodcarving which has flourished here since the 17th century. Home to three cultures – Italian, Austrian, and the native Ladin, most signage in Val Gardena is written in three languages – Italian, German, and Ladin!

In the afternoon, meet with a Dolomite Mountains representative who will provide a trip briefing and orientation, as well as maps, and everything necessary for your self-guided adventure. Depending on when you arrive, you may have time for a hike or to explore the surroundings.

Day 2 ~ Sciliar Plateau and Mount Pez
Begin your hike in the morning from the top station of the Alpe Di Siusi cable car. The snowbound Austrian Alps shimmer to the north, while the imposing Sciliar Massif stands out to the west. Your trail heads through lush meadow,s past photogenic summer farms, and continues to the Rifugio Malga Saltner at 1,850 meters (6,069'). This rifugio is proudly advertised as the “last filling station” before the climb, complete with a “lead free” drinking fountain! From here, start the 600-meter (1,968') uphill section of the hike, which has a seemingly interminable series of zigzags. Not to worry, your persistence will pay off when you reach your rifugio, complete with lunch and incredible views! (~5-6 hours hiking, 14km / 8,4 miles, 800m /2,625' ascent, 340m/1,115 descent.)

Depending on the time of arrival at your Rifugio, you have the option to hike to the summit of Mount Pez (2,564m / 8,412').

Day 3 ~ Sassopiatto
Hike from your rifugio to Rifugio Alpe di Tires (2,440m / 8,005'), from where you can enjoy the wonderful views of the surrounding Sciliar-Catinaccio Nature Park. Today’s hike offers high altitude panoramic walking with superb scenery; wild flowers grow in abundance on the grassy slopes populated by cows and marmots, while small birds of prey hovering for rodents can be observed.

At the head of two valleys, where Val di Fassa and Val Gardena both begin, is the magnificent twin formation Sassolungo-Sassopiatto (literally long stone and flat stone). Seen from the air, the formation resembles a horseshoe that is open at the northwest end, and accommodates two tiny glaciers. Intriguing explanations for the origin of the mountain are furnished in legends: one says the cruel King Laiadro, responsible for the death of his mother, is buried in the mountain, and his outstretched empty hand is clearly visible from Passo Sella reaching up as the five rock points of the Cinque Dita (Five Fingers).
(~5 hours hiking 12km / 7 miles, 498m / 1,633' ascent, 650m / 2,132' descent.)

Day 4 ~ Return to Val Gardena
Indulge in a hearty alpine breakfast before departing this morning. Leave the rifugio and start hiking on toward Rifugio Vicenza (2,256m / 7,340’) nested at the foot of the dramatic towering peaks of Sassolungo-Sassopiatto.
Continue on a scree and gravel track to Rifugio Comici (2.153m / 7,061’) and enjoy a mouth watering fish based lunch with stunning views of Val Gardena valley. Continue hiking through ‘City of Stones’, a scenic trail through impressive boulder rocks formations at foot of the Sassolungo mountain. End your hike at Passo Sella (2,218m / 7,275’) for a private transfer to your hotel.
(~4-5 hours hiking 10km / 6 miles, 360m / 1,180' ascent, 490m / 1,607' descent.)

Want to learn more about our Mountain Inns & Rifugi?

Rifugi – or mountain huts in English – are the classic accommodation for hikers, climbers, mountaineers, and ski mountaineers in the Alps. Set in spectacular locations high in the Dolomites, rifugi are accessible only on foot (with a few exceptions that are reachable by car). These marvelous establishments are open primarily in the summer, with a select few in winter, and offer meals and sleeping facilities.

The Dolomite rifugi are considered the best in the Alps. While some are dormitory style with bunk beds, many meet the standard of a simple guest house with private rooms and en-suite bathrooms, and each has its own unique character and charm. Bedding and linens are provided, hot showers are available, and meals are served in common dining areas – like a small mountain inn set high in the mountains with the most incredible vistas in the Dolomites. Whether you’re hiking in summer or skiing in winter, an overnight rifugio stay is not to miss on a Dolomite holiday.

To learn even more about rifugi in the Dolomites, check out our Rifugios in the Dolomites article, and learn about one of the best ways to experience these incredible mountains!
