OVERVIEW

Tucked into Northern Italy, Lake Garda is blessed with beautiful beaches, intense transparent blue water, vertical rocky cliffs, rolling hills, and towering mountains, all waiting to be discovered. Just a few hours drive from Milan, Venice, and the Dolomites, Lake Garda (Lago di Garda or Lago Benàco) is the largest, yet least well known of Italy's lakes. Carved by glaciers, the diversity of the landscape here is truly remarkable. The temperate climate and flourishing vegetation – primarily olive and lemon groves, orange trees, palms, cypresses, and oleanders – combine with the landscape to provide a lush background to the remarkable historical and cultural remains dotting the shoreline. Plus, the Dolomite Mountains are never far away, and can be seen towering above the lake.

Set above the narrow northern part of the Lake Garda is Arco di Trento. Enclosed by mountains, the jagged rock surrounding Arco creates not only beautiful fjords on the lake, but also fantastic opportunities for climbing and via ferrata! Via ferrata literally means “iron path,” originating from the metal ladders used by the military in WWI to navigate these mountains. While most of the ferrata have been replaced with newer hardware, almost half of the via ferrata above Lake Garda take the original soldiers’ routes, allowing you to climb over the fortifications and through the trenches and tunnels of the original battlefields of World War One, high into the mountains. And, with the proximity to the lake, you’ll have stupendous panoramas throughout your climbs!

Our via ferrata holidays provide an opportunity to learn the rope work skills required for the safe use of this type of route. All of our via ferrata trips are led by UIAGM/IFMGA Professional Mountain Guides, ensuring your safety and enjoyment. Completely protected, attached to a system of anchored cables while you climb, you’ll enjoy vistas typically reserved only for mountaineers!

Day by Day

Hike and climb your way high above Lake Garda on via ferrata of WWI, ascending a different challenging via ferrata each day, and discover the intense blue waters of Italy’s largest and most beautiful – yet least well-known – lake from above.

Day 1 ~ Arrival
Arrive in Arco di Trento on your own, and check into your hotel (transfers available on request). Set just north of Lake Garda, Arco faces the lake at one end, and is surrounded by mountains at the other. Its 15,000 inhabitants and visitors alike relish the gentle mild climate and its position near the water. The mountains that border the city have extended its appeal beyond water sports, and made it a world-renowned destination for rock climbing. In addition to outdoor climbing, in the center of town you will find numerous man-made climbing halls. Since 1987, the annual Rock Master Sport Climbing World Championship is held here, attracting climbers from all over the world every September. It is also not surprisingly a great place for hikers, mountain bikers, and road cyclists, as the surrounding area is perfect for these outdoor sports.

The afternoon is free to explore on your own. There are several palaces, including the Palazzo dei Panni and Palazzo Marchetti, numerous villas, multiple churches, including Collegiate Church of the Assumption and Sanctuary of Our Lady of Grace, as well as a number of spas to relax in (Arco has long been known primarily as a 'winter health resort city'). We recommend visiting the Arco Castle and the Arboretum, which are two of our favorite sites.

Days 2 and 3 ~ Via Ferrata
In the morning, meet your local English speaking Professional UIAGM/IFMGA Mountain Guide for a trip briefing and orientation, and to check-out the ferrata equipment you will use for your exciting days climbing via ferrata.  Before departing this morning, your guide will give you a lesson on via ferrata climbing technique, equipment use, and safety.

There are many via ferratas and climbing options to choose from in the Lake Garda / Arco di Trento area. You will select from these with the recommendations of your guide, based on the weather forecast and fitness levels, abilities, and interests of each participant. A selection of our favorites are listed below.

Via Ferrata Cima Capi
Transfer from Arco to Biacesa (402m / 1,319'), in the Val di Ledro on the east side of Lake Garda (20 minutes). Via Ferrata Cima Capi is a great ferratawith wonderful views. At times, the trail is fairly exposed, offering increasingly breathtaking vistas of Lake Garda, the Sarca Valley, and the vertical walls below. This is a strenuous climb, due to the vertical gain involved. Once you reach the summit, the pointy pinnacle of Cima Capi (909m / 2,982'), you cross the old walkways, fortifications, and tunnels built during the First World War. Bring a torch (headlamp) to explore the fortifications on the way back!
(3 hours hiking and 2 hours ascending a moderate 757m / 2,484' via ferrataa)

Via Ferrata Colodri
This wonderful route is ideal for beginners and families. You’ll climb up the well-known Arco rock walls, to the top of Mt. Colodri, which offers amazing view overlooking Lake Garda. This via ferratta was originally used by climbers, to descend after reaching the tops of rock climbing routes. Today the descent takes you through olive groves, and passes an old Stations of the Cross. No transfer required.
(1.5 hours hiking and 1.5 hours ascending an easy 270m / 886' via ferrata.)

Via Ferrata Rio Sallagoni
Take a 10 minute transfer from Arco, north to Drena (415m / 1,360'). Via Ferrata Rio Sallagoni climbs along the smooth walls of a narrow gorge above theSallagoni River, making for a nice, cool adventure on hot days! Little waterfalls and dancing light inside the canyon offer a wild experience, creating an atmosphere similar to canyoning – except that you will be climbing along the walls above the water, rather than in it. The majority of the climbing is on stemples – iron rungs fixed into the rock, so the climb is not technically very difficult. However, you will face some fun, challenging sections – where the canyon walls jut out, the distance between stemples increases, and even a cable bridge that will test your balance! At the end of the ferrata, the gorge opens up to a series of lush, green tropical-feeling spaces surrounded by the high rock walls. As you exit the gorge, you’ll climb a pretty log staircase, followed by steep trail, up to the magnificent Castello di Drena (Drena Castle), the highlight of which is a climb up to the top of the castle's tower.
(1 hour hiking and 2 hours ascending a moderate 130m / 427' via ferrata. Total 380m / 1,247' ascent and descent.)

Via Ferrata Sentiero dei Contrabbandieri / Massimiliano Torti
Transfer from Arco to Pregasina (505m / 1,658') on the east side of Lake Garda (25 minutes). Via Ferrata Sentiero dei Contrabbandieri, in English “the smugglers’ trail,” retraces an ancient path that salt and tobacco smugglers once used. It offers not only a superb climbing experience and a marvelous view of Lake Garda, but ascending these vertical walls evokes the lives of those fearless men. You’ll begin with a hike to the vertical sections that rise steeply from the lake, and continue across exposed ledges, traverse on climbing slings, walk across on a time-worn log, as well as climb a secured ladder. This exciting trail is a path cut out from the rock, with a sheer drop over the lake. Every so often the path “disappears” and requires some short – but exciting! – climbing, and will impress you with its wild beauty.
(1.5 hours hiking and 3.5 hours ascending a challenging 767m / 2,516 via ferrata.)

Via Ferrata Rino Pisetta
Transfer 20 minutes north from Arco to Sarche (252m / 826'). Via Ferrata Rino Pisettamay be the hardest ferrata in the Lake Garda area, with a fascinating climb on the steep walls of Piccolo Dain (also called Monte Garzole), above the blue waters of Lake Toblino. This ferrata requires experience and concentration, with the reward of breathtaking views and a strong sense of accomplishment.
(2 hours hiking and 4-hours ascending a challenging 721m / 2,365' via ferrata.)

Via Ferrata Monte Albano
Transfer 20 minutes from Arco to Mori (200m / 656'), east of the lake. The legendary Via Ferrata Monte Albano is a challenging route that is not for those with a fear of heights! Perhaps one of the most technical via ferrata in the region – and one of the more popular – you’ll encounter overhanging ledges, exposed stretches, a chimney, and slippery areas where the rock is polished.  With the help of iron brackets, the slippery parts can be managed simply, and more people can enjoy the ferrata. Nevertheless a good physical fitness is an essential requirement, because the trail is still steep and demanding. After several years of closure for renovation, the route reopened in 2014. Although the character of the route has changed some after the work, it is and remains a classic iron path that no ferrata fan should miss!
(30 minutes hiking and 4.5 hours ascending a challenging 300m / 984' via ferrata.)
