OVERVIEW

On this fantastic itinerary, you’ll explore the northern realm of Lake Garda, from Arco di Trento. Set above the narrow northern part of the lake, and enclosed by mountains, the jagged rock surrounding Arco creates not only beautiful fjords on the lake, but also fantastic opportunities for all types of activities! You’ll spend one day hiking and climbing a via ferrata – “iron paths” originate from the metal ladders used by the military in WWI to navigate these mountains – affording you spectacular views from high above the lake. Another day you’ll spend canyoning, where you’ll slide your way through a narrow canyons crystal clear waters along the smooth rock. And on the third day you will go mountain biking, from Arco to a glacial lake surrounded by a vast desert of rock, remnant of glacial activities. Plus, there will be plenty of time for swimming and other water activities each day!

Tucked into Northern Italy, Lake Garda is blessed with beautiful beaches, intense transparent blue water, vertical rocky cliffs, rolling hills, and towering mountains, all waiting to be discovered. Just a few hours drive from Milan, Venice, and the Dolomites, Lake Garda (Lago di Garda or Lago Benàco) is the largest, yet least well known of Italy's lakes. Carved by glaciers, the diversity of the landscape here is truly remarkable. The temperate climate and flourishing vegetation – primarily olive and lemon groves, orange trees, palms, cypresses, and oleanders – combine with the landscape to provide a lush background to the remarkable historical and cultural remains dotting the shoreline. Plus, the Dolomite Mountains are never far away, and can be seen towering above the lake. The activities on offer combine with this beautiful setting and its ever present history to make Lake Garda a destination of choice… we hope it will be yours!

Day by Day

Climb a via ferrata high above Lake Garda, canyon through a nearby river gorge, and mountain bike to a glacial lake, as you explore the beautiful landscape, fascinating culture, and ever present history of Lake Garda on our multisport adventure!

Day 1 ~ Arrival
Arrive in Arco di Trento on your own, and check into your hotel (transfers available on request). Set just north of Lake Garda, Arco faces the lake at one end, and is surrounded by mountains at the other. Its 15,000 inhabitants and visitors alike relish the gentle mild climate and its position near the water. The mountains that border the city have extended its appeal beyond water sports, and made it a world-renowned destination for rock climbing. In addition to outdoor climbing, in the center of town you will find numerous man-made climbing halls. Since 1987, the annual Rock Master Sport Climbing World Championship is held here, attracting climbers from all over the world every September. It is also not surprisingly a great place for hikers, mountain bikers, and road cyclists, as the surrounding area is perfect for these outdoor sports.

The afternoon is free to explore on your own. There are several palaces, including the Palazzo dei Panni and Palazzo Marchetti, numerous villas, multiple churches, including Collegiate Church of the Assumption and Sanctuary of Our Lady of Grace, as well as a number of spas to relax in (Arco has long been known primarily as a 'winter health resort city'). We recommend visiting the Arco Castle and the Arboretum, which are two of our favorite sites.

Day 2 ~ Via Ferrata Cima Capi
In the morning meet your local English speaking Professional UIAGM/IFMGA Mountain Guide for a trip briefing and orientation. Next you’ll check-out the ferrata equipment you will use for your exciting day climbing via ferrata. Before departing this morning, your guide will give you a lesson on via ferrata climbing technique, equipment use, and safety.

When you’re ready to go, transfer from Arco to Biacesa (402m / 1,319'), in the Val di Ledro on the east side of Lake Garda (20 minutes). Via Ferrata Cima Capi is a great ferratawith wonderful views. At times, the trail is fairly exposed, offering increasingly breathtaking vistas of Lake Garda, the Sarca Valley, and the vertical walls below. This is a strenuous climb, due to the vertical gain involved. Once you reach the summit, the pointy pinnacle of Cima Capi (909m / 2,982'), you cross the old walkways, fortifications, and tunnels built during the First World War. Bring a torch (headlamp) to explore the fortifications on the way back!
(3 hours hiking and 2 hours ascending a moderate 757m / 2,484’ via ferrata.)

There are many via ferratas and climbing options to choose from in the Lake Garda / Arco di Trento area. You will select from these with the recommendations of your guide, based on the weather forecast and fitness levels, abilities, and interests of each participant.

Day 3 ~ Mountain Biking to Lago di Cavedine
After breakfast you’ll rent mountain bikes and begin your day biking. Depart from Arco di Trento (90m / 294'), climb north towards Dro, and on to Lago di Cavèdine (241m / 791'). Cavedine Lake is surrounded by the Marocche Desert, one of the most unique landscapes in this entire Alpine area. It is a huge stretch of boulders (187 million cubic meters / 3.5 billion cubic feet of rock) that fell from the Brento and Casale mountains as a result of glacial activity, and likely that Lake Cavedine was formed during those landslides as well. Option to swim or to paddle at the lake.
When you’re ready to leave the lake, return by bike back to Arco. En route, you’ll travel on the Massone path, near the rock climbing walls. Massone (also referred to as Policromuro, or multi-colored wall) is one of the most popular climbing sites in Italy.  This solid grey and red striped limestone wall has over 130 climbing routes, and is one of the largest developed crags in the Arco area. Stop and watch the action before you return to your hotel!
(Bike ~12km / 8 miles, 151m / 497' ascent and descent.)

There are many biking options to choose from in the Lake Garda / Arco di Trento area. You will select from these with the recommendations of your guide, based on the weather forecast and fitness levels, abilities, and interests of each participant.

Day 4 ~ Canyoning at Rio Nero Canyon
In the morning, take a private transfer to Rio Nero Canyon, set to the east of Lake Garda, passing Ledro Lake en route (~3/4 hour). Before you begin hiking, you’ll put on a wetsuit and other canyoning gear, and then hike 20 minutes uphill to the entrance of the canyon. For the next two (2) hours, you’ll descend through an absolute wonderland! The Rio Nero, or Black River in English, is carved into the steep canyon and high rock cliffs that tower above. Over centuries, the river has sculpted a fairy tale landscape of caves, grottos, and spectacular rock formations that alternate in a series of wonderful images. You’ll explore the adrenaline rush canyoning can provide, as you hike, slide, and swim your way through the crystal clear water of the canyon, accompanied by your alpine the entire way to ensure your safety.

There are several different canyoning options to choose from at Rio Nero Canyon. You will select from these with the recommendations of your guide, based on the weather forecast and fitness levels, abilities, and interests of each participant.

After your hike, enjoy lunch near where you started your canyoning adventure. In the afternoon, you have the option to relax at one of the four beaches at Lake Ledro (655m / 2,149') and go for a swim.
