Lake Garda

Via Ferrata & Hiking Experience at Lake Garda

On this seven-day guided adventure at Riva del Garda, you'll climb high above Lake Garda, hike on the adrenaline-filled "Smugglers' Path" above Pregasina, and summit Monte Stivo as you take in the scenery. Enjoy a private boat tour of Malcesine and Limone, and six nights in excellent hotels.

Trip Overview

Based in Riva del Garda on the dramatic northern shore of Lake Garda, this seven-day guided adventure combines some of the finest via ferrata climbing in northern Italy with a landscape very different from the classic Dolomites. Here, limestone cliffs plunge 300m / 984' directly into azure water. Orange groves cling to terraced shores. A medieval castle watches over every town you visit.

You'll begin the week with a full equipment briefing with your UIAGM/IFMGA mountain guide, followed by your first ascent, chosen from several outstanding options, including the gorge via ferrata of Rio Sallagoni, where you climb iron rungs through a slot canyon above a rushing river in an experience closer to canyoning than traditional climbing.

The signature moment of the entire trip is the Smugglers' Path, Il Sentiero dei Contrabbandieri. This extraordinary horizontal ledge, carved into the 300m / 984' western cliffs of Lake Garda and equipped with 450 fixed bolts, was originally used during the First World War to smuggle salt and tobacco across the border between Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It demands good physical conditioning, a guide, and absolute calm around heights, and it delivers one of the most cinematic mountain experiences in Italy. Afterward, your private boat carries you across to Malcesine and Limone, medieval lakeside towns with narrow streets and the finest olive oil on the lake, where there'll be plenty of time for relaxing, drinking wine, tasting olive oil, and eating delicious food.

For the final two days, you'll enjoy equally varied adventures: a ridge hike along the WWI Italian front line at Creste di Pregasina with 360-degree views over the lake and the technical challenge of Via Ferrata Monte Albano.

Set above the narrow northern part of the lake and enclosed by mountains, the jagged rock surrounding Riva del Garda creates beautiful fjords and excellent opportunities for adventure!
