Dolomites Via Ferrata

Dolomites Hiking & Via Ferrata of World War I

Hike and climb your way through history on this six-day multisport adventure. You'll traverse legendary WWI via ferrata routes, explore hidden mountain tunnels, and discover ruins transformed into open-air museums. From Cortina to Canazei, experience the vertical world of the Dolomite Mountains while enjoying excellent hotel accommodations and world-class hospitality.

Trip Overview

Imagine the Dolomites between 1915 and 1918. During the Great War, these peaks were a vertical battlefield where Italian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers carved tunnels, bridges, and “iron paths” into the rock. Today, these silent witnesses have been transformed into some of the most exhilarating via ferrata routes in the world. On this six-day guided journey, you’ll walk in the footsteps of history, exploring open-air museums and summiting legendary peaks from three distinct and beautiful alpine hubs: Cortina d’Ampezzo, Arabba, and Canazei.

Your adventure begins in the Ampezzo Basin, where you’ll tackle the Via Ferrata degli Alpini at Col dei Bos (2,559m / 8,396’). This modern route leads to a high-altitude Rifugio where you’ll descend through a remarkable winding tunnel system dug by hand over a century ago. From there, the journey moves toward Col di Lana. Unlike the technical climbs, this day focuses on a poignant hike across a wire-protected ridge (2,452m / 8,045’), offering a deep dive into the human cost of the conflict.

The technical intensity increases as you move toward the Marmolada Glacier. You’ll ascend the Via Ferrata delle Trincee (2,727m / 8,947’), a challenging route that follows a lava-rock ridge filled with WWI fortifications and dark clefts. The adventure concludes in the Catinaccio Group with the ridge itinerary of Via Ferrata Masaré (2,537m / 8,321’), known for its exposed steps and vertical chimneys. Throughout the week, you’ll be accompanied by a professional UIAGM/IFMGA mountain guide who'll keep you safe on the cables. After each day, you’ll relax in excellent, hand-selected hotels to enjoy authentic Ladin hospitality and regional cuisine.

This hiking & via ferrata multisport tour is a wonderful connection to the past set against the most beautiful mountains on Earth. Are you ready to touch the sky? Book your historical adventure today!

Want to learn more about our Mountain Inns & Rifugi?
Rifugi – or mountain huts in English – are the classic accommodation for hikers, climbers, mountaineers, and ski mountaineers in the Alps. Set in spectacular locations high in the Dolomites, rifugi are accessible only on foot (with a few exceptions that are reachable by car). These marvelous establishments are open primarily in the summer, with a select few in winter, and offer meals and sleeping facilities.

The Dolomite Rifugi are considered the best in the Alps. While some are dormitory style with bunk beds, many meet the standard of a simple guest house with private rooms and en-suite bathrooms, and each has its own unique character and charm. Bedding and linens are provided, hot showers are available, and meals are served in common dining areas – like a small mountain inn set high in the mountains with the most incredible vistas in the Dolomites. Whether you’re hiking in summer or skiing in winter, an overnight rifugio stay is not to miss on a Dolomite holiday.
